I also think the physical and emotional toll of losing to US.C in five sets at home in the closest possible fashion, and then beating Arizona on the road in the closest possible fashion, probably did sap some of the energy we needed. That first set was just terrible in almost every way.
And yes, they were ranked higher than us. And it is the first time we have lost to them in 15 years.Â
I have a feeling there are going to be more growing pains while we wait for Jordan to fully recover and for our frosh to become more complete players. I'm hoping that by the end of the season we will be back to being a well-oiled machine.
Last night Lutz continue to be sharp, hitting .419 with 15 kills. Burgess upped her percentage a bit to .227 and managed 7 kills. Howard had an off night--that was a big problem. She hit .097 and only 8 kills. In that disastrous first set she hit the ball long a lot. There was a very promising performance by Hayley Hodson, the #1 recruit playing constantly as a frosh. She hit .250--a big improvement--and had a whopping 18 kills. We just could have used Burgess and Howard to have similar nights.
A massive problem seems to be our center blocker whenever Lutz is out--i.e., filling in for Inky. Ivana Vanjak has been converted just a few weeks ago for that position, and she is playing very well I think for a beginner. But she certainly can't be expected to be up to Inky's or Lutz's level yet. She did hit .571 with 4 kills and 0 errors--which is amazingly considering--but her blocking was a bit suspect and the team simply did not feature her in the offense much. She had only 7 total attempts, compared with Hodson with 44, for example. ASU wound up with more total blocks than we did.
