This is Stanford's 10th season in the new stadium. I started wondering how successful we've been in the new stadium. So I went back and looked at our home field record since we opened the stadium in 2006.

W/L record from 2006 through 2015 to date:

Home record        44-16    .733
Road record          29-26    .527
Neutral (bowls)      3-3      .500

Total                    76-45    .628
     
Pretty impressive home field advantage!

But when you break it down, it gets even more impressive. Stanford's home field record during its first two seasons in the new stadium was pretty awful. Stanford went 0-5 at home in the new stadium's debut season (2006), then went 2-6 in the second season (2007). So Stanford was 2-11 at home in those first two seasons, a bit worse than Stanford's 3-8 record on the road during those seasons.

Beginning in 2008, Stanford turned things around. Stanford became dominant at home.

It seemed that there was a dead ball personal foul on UA that was spotted as a dead ball foul but downs were counted as if it were a live play foul.

If I recall correctly (without resorting to any further research), those 5 losses have come vs. USC (2008), C.al (2009), Oregon (2011), USC (2014), Utah (2014).  Last year's losses seem even more anomalous when you look at the recent record.  42 home wins since 2008!  I am grateful for each and every one.

That play happened right in front of me and it wasn't a dead ball foul.  The play and tackle were happening on the West side of the field and while our defender was looking that direction, the Arizona receiver gave him a cheap shot from the side and knocked him down.  They happened simultaneously and, when I watched the recording, the ref didn't call it a dead ball foul.  It happened somewhere around the 20 or 25 yard line so it was half the distance to the goal and a repeat of second down.  I was up screaming at the Arizona player but the Arizona coaches soon took over.  I was at least glad the coaches were upset unlike some of the reaction I've seen from USC coaches after personal fouls.

On the replay you can hear "Dead ball foul ..." as the ref begins to describe the infraction. However, it is kind of muffled and doesn't sound like the rest of the description, and I am not sure it was the ref talking or a mike that picked up somebody else claiming that.

Secondly, there is some issue on the yardage, but I have to go back and read/remember the rules on where things get marked off from. The ball was placed on the 15. The previous line of scrimmage was the 27 - halfway to the goal would be the 13 1/2. On the play in question, the ball was downed at the 30 - and marking off 15 yards from there would be the 15. However, that would also be the case if the infraction occurred on the 30 and perhaps they marked off the penalty from the location of the infraction.

So, given your correction, my current understanding is that it was indeed a live ball foul that occurred at the 30, was marked off from that point, and it was mere coincidence that the ball was also marked at the 30 after the play.

Stanford lost at Wake Forest (another 9 am pacific start), beat Duke in Durham and beat Navy at Annapolis (it was a night game).  If you want to go further back, Stanford also lost at Wisconsin and North Carolina in the late 1990s.

So, it seems that Stanford's home winning percentage over the past ~7.5 years is right on par with the nation's elite.  The road percentage is very poor, comparatively.  However, over the first two years of that time span Stanford went 13-12.  It wasn't until 2010 that Stanford broke through and became a national power.  During that same time span (2008-09), Alabama went 26-2 and Oregon went 20-6.

If we bring the starting point up to the beginning of the 2010 season, this is how the teams shake out:

Alabama
Home 34-4 (0.895)
Road 19-4 (0.826)
Neutral 9-3 (0.750)

Oregon
Home 34-4 (0.895)
Road 23-3 (0.885)
Neutral 6-3 (0.667)

Stanford
Home 30-3 (0.909)

So since the beginning of the 2010 season, Stanford has a better home record than either Alabama or Oregon.  Very impressive.
