I thought they got the preponderance of the calls; though of course I am biased in the other direction.

Of course that was mostly angry person on the internet. It would appear that David Shaw kicked some sand in the face of Mr. murray.

The coasting thing is getting pretty funny in Shaw's fifth year as coach - now the second longest serving head coach in the Pac 12. I would be perfectly happy if Shaw never does anything decent on his own and merely coasts along like this for another 10 years or so.

It took grit for the players to come back and make it a game — including making some of their own luck with some excellent defense and turnovers of their own in the second half, but it also took luck for the kicker to coug it at the end. There was much local celebration when Cal had the same luck against Texas in the beginning of the year.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. How many times have we been on the other side of that luck, and often against a good team? I can think of several times against Notre Dame, and Colorado's championship year with a very positive call for Eric Bienemy at the end. "Orange Power" brought home a trophy because of such luck.

I'm also pointing out that some of the loudest voices complaining about Stanford's luck were the beneficiaries of nearly identical luck at the beginning of the season.

Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good, as the saying goes. I'm happy to be on the winning side of this one, but I seriously hold nothing against Coug fans complaining about the refs. We might be doing the same thing if the tables were turned. It's more the hypocritical cal fans that I bash in this case.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. How many times have we been on the other side of that luck, and often against a good team? His 4 minute drill clock management is awful, awful, awful.  Has cost the Cougs multiple games, and just seems like terrible coaching.  IMHO.

Even Oregon, with Kelly, knew the deal.  In close games with a 2 score lead in the 4th quarter the Ducks would still go no huddle but woudl then stand somewhat ready to go until the play clock got to :04 or so.

Still Washington State could win out at this point.  That would be helpful for Stanford's CFP chances since a lucky win over a 9-3 or 8-4 type Wazzu team will look better, on paper.

ASU vs Washington State - ASU looks good, but I like Wazzu's chances hosting in their frozen tundra.
Wazzu @ UCLA - UCLA starters were better, but the injuries and destroyed dreams may make that team vulnerable
Colorado vs Washington State - Should be an easy win.
Apple Cup - Anything is possible, but Wazzu will have a chance.

While I understand the criticism of Leach's clock-management skills, did those have anything to do with this loss? If he had used up more time earlier in the game, Washington State would have had less time to get down the field on that last drive.

All they had to do was burn 3:30 for the win, but they were throwing low-probability pass downfield, and high risk sideline passes in their own territory.  As a result, they turned it over, and left us plenty of time to score -- too much as it turned out -- but they could have salted the game away on the pre-interception drive, or at least given Stanford half the time and twice the distance to score...

That's a little hard to tell, though probably it didn't ultimately have anything to do with the cougs losing.

The relevant moment was when they got the ball back, 5:08 on the clock, their own 28, up 28-27.
The first set of downs they ran for 3 yards, 4 yards, then got sacked on third down but the sack was wiped out by a holding penalty on one of our DBs. They didn't run down the play clock between plays.
Presumably spooked by the close call, reverted to all passing and they went incomplete, INT.
