- Fri Sept 2 vs Kansas State
- Sat Oct 15 @ND
- Sat Nov 26 vs Rice
I would guess Big Game is Sat Nov 19

Late season game vs Rice isn't very exciting.Â
Would've rather played Rice on Sept 2 as an easy opener (since apparently we play terrible on opening games), and Kansas St late (maybe they'll be good).

Aw, not an away game at Rice (which would have been 3 hrs from me).Â
But hey, maybe we're emulating the $EC and their late-season tune-up games...this also means that the second game of the season is immediately a conference game (U$C, please).

Rice was originally the season home opener labor day weekend. To find a 12th game we apparently had to sign up KSU that weekend and move Rice to the Sat after Thanksgiving......

I don't mind playing Rice late. Alabama, the #2 team in the nation, just played Charleston Southern. Might be a nice late-season stat padder.

Except that Rice will be the LAST game of the regular season, not the second to last. If the team is contending for a CFP spot this isn't going to help.

Well, if Stanford is contending for a CFP spot, Rice will not be the last game of the regular season. That would be the Pac-12 championship game.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

Unfortunately, like 80-90% of college football teams, KState plays their rivalry game Thanksgiving weekend. Most power 5 (maybe non-power 5 too) teams can't play Thanksgiving weekend since they have their conference rivalry game then.

didn't they have a promo at Big Game that 2016 season renewals would start Feb 1? If so a schedule announcement in Jan seems like a good bet.

The situation in 2012 was awkward for Stanford, awkward for UCLA and not favorable for the conference. It seemed tough to interest many casual fans in a championship that paired the same teams that had played 6 days prior. The Pac 12 said they would work to avoid similar situations in the future. But in 2014, there we were again. Now it may be the case that no other schools will play rivalry games the Saturday before Thanksgiving. In this case, you are correct that there are limited options - Stanford vs. UCLA, Stanford vs. a non-conference opponent or an open date.Â

The logical thing would be to try to pair Pac-12 North teams with each other and Pac-12 South teams with each other. So, you might have rivalry week the week before Thanksgiving and then the following Thanksgiving matchups in the North:
Washington-Oregon
Oregon-Cal
Washington St-Stanford
And in the South:
UCLA - Utah
Colorado - Arizona
ASU - USC
The problem, of course, is Notre Dame, who plays Stanford on odd years and USC on even years. This forces the conference to leave one team unpaired each year, so that team will either have a bye (Arizona this year) or finding an out of conference opponent (Cal played BYU last year). One could have an annual game against BYU (or another independent) that rotates for those teams not playing Notre Dame. In this case, when Stanford plays ND, Washington State would play BYU, and if USC played Notre Dame, then ASU would play BYU.
