The latter is a lot more worrying for us, so hopefully I'm right.
Adams really played remarkably well this year, especially when he got healthy and better integrated into the Oregon offense over the latter part of the season. I wouldn't describe him as a poor man's Mariota, maybe an upper-middle class man's Mariota.Â
They didn't quite play the same role, and in fact I would say Adams somewhere in between the styles of Darron Thomas and Mariota.
Adams leads the entire country in PER this year at 179.6.
This is only just behind Mariota last year at 181.8.
Adams passing stats in 2015 are remarkably similar to Mariota's in 2014, though Adams only played in 9 games (really 8). So attempts per game, yards per game, all close.
Adams runs a lot less than Mariota, especially once he started fitting in. He had 94 yards in his first game vs Eastern Washington, then after that averaged 7.6 yds per game. Mariota rushed for 700-800 yards every season at Oregon.
Thomas didn't run so much either, except against us in 2010. He was a scrambler more than a runner - like Adams. Thomas seems to have much more of a reputation of a runner than he really was - perhaps because he was generally athletic and looked a little funny throwing the ball. Thomas rushed for a reasonably healthy 486 yards in 2010 (117 vs us), only 206 yards in 2011. He didn't pass as much as Mariota or Adams, as Oregon relied heavily on LaMichael James back then. But his passer rating was a respectable 158.7 and he did pass for 212 yds/game.
