Cam's an extraordinary athlete - a 6'5" inch QB that can rush like a power running back and also make accurate passes within a collapsing pocket.  This year his decision making and in-game leadership jumped to the next level.  Despite adapting defenses that caught up to his recent peers he's continued to succeed as Kaepernick, RG3, et al fell to the wayside.  We could be seeing a season for the ages.

It's not my favorite part of Newton's game but he's earned his celebrations fairly and I won't complain too much as long as they don't descend to taunting opponents.  Frankly, that was the line Sherman crossed with his NFC championship Crabtree rant. 

Many modern players don't want to "act like you've been there before" as Walter Payton suggested. The lines have moved and insisting on pushing them back to where they stood in the 80s would threaten my enjoyment of a great game and its greatest players.

Nothing reprehensible about celebrating a great play.  However, some "celebrations" are of the "you can't spell T-E-A-M without M-E" or "my teammates couldn't do it without me" variety, while others are more of the "there's no 'I' in team" or "I couldn't do it without my teammates" variety.  I don't think it's hypocritical, pearl-clutching, or "seriously problematic" to prefer the latter over the former.  And, as for making kids smile, that's great; but I admire the players who do that in private just as much as [or even more than] those who do it on national TV when they know the spotlight is on them.

I think your last sentence is why many in the public will always think it's okay to presume such things about athletes accused of PED use (until proof otherwise is provided).  Also, proving your innocence is essentially required for a number of things in this country, and there's nothing we can do about that either.

I have no problem with spiking the ball after a TD or even some of these ridiculous end zone celebrations. But let's face it, so many of these narcissistic clowns want the world to know how great they are simply for DOING THE JOB THAT THEY WERE PAID TO DO. Make a tackle? Pose. Catch a pass? Dance. Run for a 1st Down? Look into the crowd and nod your head. It's just stupid. If a player wants that much self recognition for just doing his job, then he should also be willing to do a humility dance for under-performing. That might rekindle my interest in the NFL.  ;D

Last I checked, the NFL is entertainment, and plenty of people find those celebrations entertaining.  The NFL has been nicknamed the "No Fun League" not because it has banished amazing plays but because of the prohibitions of celebrations.

I generally don't have a problem with the celebrations, though I do get a bit irked when an elaborate celebration is over a relatively routine play.  I think a sliding-scale rule of reason is generally appropriate.  Big TD celebrations?  Those are fun!  Touchdowns are important, so go nuts!  Nice open field tackle after a 5-yard gain on first down?  A high five or a helmet bump with some teammates feels fine for the nice tackle, but the guy still gained five yards, so no need to act like you just won the Super Bowl.

I think we can all agree that's absurd.  But for the most part, there aren't too many celebrations I see that cause me any grief.

I love Cam Newton. There will always be a segment of the population who dislikes on field celebrations of any kind, but I don't think there's anything wrong with celebrating a big play, whether it's a touchdown or a first down or a sack or a deflected pass. Perhaps more than any player in the league, Newton is clearly having fun playing the game, and as many of mentioned -- how can you not love it when he gives a ball to the kid in the stands?

And then there's the issue of race. Sadly, we (as a culture) still can't get past that can we? One day, perhaps.
