Actually, Simone Manuel, Lia Neal and Katie Ledecky collected silver. Lia Neal did not swim in the final but gets a medal because of her work in the heat. The other two swimmers in the final were from the school across the bay.

Overall, I'd say a good day for the US and Stanford. While I was disappointed that the MWP didn't win, after an encouraging first half, I have to agree that the coach probably did the right thing in giving experience to the 9 new team members, including the goalie. The game wasn't a required win.
I too get frustrated by the "live" (per their announcers) TV feed 3 hours late. It is frustrating to see the results of an event announced on one channel when it hasn't been carried "live" yet. Yet there were 4 channels of coverage on my cable system, and with 6 channels that my Tivo can record, I got through all I wanted to see (or, rather, all the viewing I'd want to do in a day).
So close for DiRado! She missed the American Record by 0.02.
Good for Hosszu to come back from the previous Olympics to win the women's 400IM (over DiRado). But her 4.79 second margin wasn't unprecedented as the announcers indicated. I think they said "in their memory". In 1992, the men's 1500 was won by 11.8 seconds. In the 1984(no Soviet Union) Olympics that Rowdy swam in, the women's 400IM was won by 9 seconds. In 1980 (65 nation boycott, incl. US), the men's 1500 was won by 16 seconds, while the women's 400 IM was won by 10.5 seconds. In 1976, the women's 400 IM was won by 5.3 seconds. In 1968, the women's 400IM was won by 13.7 seconds, while the men's 1500 was won by 18.4 seconds.Â
It is refreshing to hear well-spoken athletes! I usually expect that of college athletes, as many of the Olympians are. It is such a contrast to so much of what I hear from some pro athletes. I especially thought Ginny Thrasher did a great job in her first interview on TV after she won her gold medal. While I might expect Maya DiRado to have been coached sometime during her college career how to handle an interview, I rather doubt that Thrasher ever contemplated needing that. (I should point out that there have been numerous on-air comments about how composed & confident DiRado has been. She definitely has been.)
I don't follow tennis, but did catch a bit of Venus Williams's loss today. Taking a ~10 minute break in the middle of the match did seem rather poor sportsmanship.

I watched Maya DiRado's races in real time on NBC's live streaming site. It required me to enter my cable provider sign-in info.

I have to disagree. Indeed the west coast delay is annoying, but you can literally live stream almost every single event that takes place, even the most obscure sports, from heats to finals. NBC is broadcasting 6,755 hours of live programming.
My television is internet-capable but otherwise an HDMI cable will do the trick if you want to watch on a large screen. Moreover, the convenience of watching on an iPad or smartphone comes in very handy at times. I would say we are lucky to be in this day and age; as a kid I remember watching the Olympics on ABC and it was a very limited experience compared to this, e.g. the great Miracle On Ice game was broadcast on a 3-hour delay even on the East coast, and there was no alternative at all.

Katie Ledecky's dominance is so impressive to watch: she was clearly cruising in the 400 Free qualifying swim this morning to save energy for tonight, yet she came within 0.34 of her WR, second fastest time in history.

One of the other Rio channels had a piece on Ledecky. In it is a shot of the record board at her girl's high school, with one column being the school records and the other being the pool records. Other than the diving & relays, and the pool record in the 50 Free, all records were Ledecky's. (Ledecky's 50Fr school record 23.19 was better than the pool record.) Here 200 IM was 4 seconds slower than the pool record for the 200 Medley Relay. Here 200 Free was 0.57 seconds slower than the 200 Free Relay (with her on it). There was no 400 Free record, but her 500 Free record averaged 53.3/100yd, while the 400 Free Relay (with her on it) averaged 55.0/100yd. Classic big fish in a small pond, but she's a big fish in the biggest pond as well.
I hadn't heard that Alexander Massialas went into the Olympics ranked #1.

Janet was interviewed on NBC Sunday night as part of the Olympics coverage, mostly regarding Katie, but also to get in some plugs for L.A. for the 2024 Olympics (she's has a position on the committee pushing for that). She was as articulate as always.

Living in GMT I can report that both Massilas and Ledecky won golds last evening. Are we recruiting the 17 year old rifle shooter from Arkansas? If so, we lead the world in the medal count!
