Tied at two sets a piece, score SRB 13, USA 12, Serbia gives up a service error. USA promptly gives up a service error of its own. Serbia wins the next point. Sigh.
Where was Foluke in set five? I don't remember seeing her at all :(

I think I saw her on the sideline but was admittedly on a conference call and only half watching (stupid work ruining my Olympics).
That was a painful swing as the US was up by a few points midway through the final set. If the US had just sided out the rest of the way, they would be in the gold medal game. Great comeback by the Serbs.

Yeah, I saw a couple shots of her on the bench with her glasses on her forehead, but I never saw her on the court :(
As posted above, Foluke injured her knee at the end of the first set (landing awkwardly on a block attempt), tried to play a few points at the beginning of the second set and then sat down with an ice pack on her knee. According to the announcers she passed an ACL test.
Her absence seemed to really discombobulate the US which lost the next two sets, but then the US regrouped and got outstanding hitting from Karsta Lowe off the bench, won the fourth set and led 10-7 in the fifth before serving and passing errors did them in. Serbia played extremely well (particularly on offense) but Foluke's absence was likely the difference in such a close match (also note that the US had beaten Serbia 3-1 in group play). Pretty depressing all around.

Has anyone else found that the absence of Stanford women, or Pac-12 women for that matter, on the US Women's Basketball team has made it hard to care about that sport during these olympics?

On a much happier note, 2 of the major contributors to the gold medal water polo team (Maggie Steffens an Mackenzie Fischer) will be playing for Stanford this year. Now if we could just steal that goalie from Princeton ....

Our goalie, Stone, took the school year off to train with the national team. She will be back and is outstanding.Â

Yes, very much so. Even having Candace Parker on the team would have increased my interest, since I've become an LA Sparks fan and Parker is one of Nneka's teammates there.
Supposedly the team is picked by a committee and the coach has input but is not on the committee, just as in Tara's year as coach when she was publicly not entirely happy with the selection. But they sure do load up on UConn grads. Last Olympics there was fan friction about older UConn grads on the team who were past their prime while younger rising players like Nneka were left off. This time Nneka is still left off while a new UConn grad (admittedly a great player) is included.

No, for me, it hasn't. It would have been cool to have Nneka out there, but beyond that and maybe Chiney, which current WNBA player that came from a Pac-12 school would have made it?
The US is blessed with womens basketball talent and a lot of that talent are UConn grads. I would certainly raise bias if Bria Hartley or Kelly Faris made the team, but Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird are still three of the best players out there. Yes, Taurasi and Bird might not be in their 20s anymore, but they are still very darn talented.
The only change I would make is subbing Breanna Stewart for Candace Parker or Nneka, especially based on this season's form (and that's no knock against the amazing Stewart), but how can you argue against Elena Delle Donne, the reigning WNBA MVP or Britney Griner or Angel McCoughtry? The depth of talent for the US is amazing. The players that did not make the team like Nneka, Chiney, Skylar Diggins, Parker, Cappie Pondexter, etc. could challenge for a gold medal themselves.
No matter who you choose, you are gonna leave some great players off and that is a great problem to have.
