A question for the long time fans - when did Stanford last have a player from the state of Kansas?  Nate Lohn and Ben Ladner were from KC, Missouri.  I cannot recall a single player from Kansas going back at least 20 years.

I've come to realize the pre-season magazines usually miss quite a bit, often overlooking some and incorrectly identifying others as key cogs when they really aren't.

DL: Will Geary (Jr. DT 6'0" 297 lbs)  - A former walk-on who burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman and was a 12-game starter as a sophomore (2015). Ranked eighth on the team with 45 tackles, fourth in tackles for loss (6.5) and fifth in sacks (3.5). His tackle total is the most by a K-State interior defensive lineman since 2005.

Unless I am mishearing, it seems both teams have the same mysteries heading into the season; OL and QB. I am hesitant to be confident, but I know our OL will be strong by BIGXII play. I very much expect growing pains in the first game. Hopefully our OC and Snyder have a scheme with that in mind.

There are superficial similarities between some of the personnel issues on both KSU and Stanford. Both are still looking for their starting QB, both have substantial new faces on the OL, and both see the strength of their defense as a pretty deep defensive backfield.

I am not so sure that those similarities go all that deep. AT KSU the QB prospects include one guy who played for a year and one guy who already won a competition for the starting job but got injured before he could do much. At Stanford the two guys in competition have barely played due to a very stable previous quarterbacking situation, but are big strong mobile guys who have been in the system for several years now (one entering fourth year, the other third).

On the OL, Stanford is looking at guys who have played quite a bit because of our use of 6-7-8 OL on lots of downs, but still will have 3 of 5 who have never been in the key starting group. Don't know much about the KSU situation other than they are replacing 4 of 5, with apparently new positions for all five.

3. We will have a new starting QB - whom no one will fear until he makes them
4. They generally don't know what else to do.

I am not so sure it is a good idea, but I am fairly sure Stanford will see a lot of stacked boxes this season.

Perhaps I'm naive, but I don't have that much concern about the OL. Sure, they need to gel (2014 is evidence that talent doesn't overcome chemistry/communication defficiencies), but the guys have been in the program and our use of the ogre means they have experience even if not starting.

There is reason to be excited about the DL.  With a year of starting experience Solomon Thomas is expected to become a star on the OL.  He was HM last year, and all reports point to him having a dominant season this year.

Reports lately have been very bullish about Harrison Phillips.  I think enthusiasm was tempered by the fact that nobody knew how he was going to come back from his injury, but many of those concerns are being laid to rest this pre-season.  Let's not forget that he was someone who played as a true freshman and was a started as a sophomore until he blew out his ACL.  Reports from practices and the scrimmage showed that these two could be phenomenal for us.

Obviously there are questions about who will be our third linemen when we are not in the nickel, and who will be in the rotation and/or available if one of our linemen gets injured.  But I think there is good reason to be bullish about the defensive line.

Maybe last year because the DL was so crazy thin and the secondary was being remade, but my recollection is that even then it was a pretty good battle between the 1's. And since this is still pretty early in the process and starters haven't even been named, I'm not all that worried (I mean, besides the standard amount of pre-season worrying). After all, there's a good chance that this is the best defense the offense will see until bowl season. (Who's the competition for that title, Washington? Maybe ND if they stop getting arrested?)

I'm sure that we can miff their fans easily enough.  Maybe the Band can resurrect the Rose Bowl half time show.  Just replace the corn costume with a wheat stalk.  We'll see if the K State fans understand the humor better than the Hawkeye fans did.

I am a little surprised you said, "Not many Stanford fans are going to have in depth knowledge of the Wildcats." I know you are probably overlooking us, but as your first non-conference power 5 opponent I would have thought a good percentage of your fan base would be learning all they could.

I appreciate it more than anything. Trash talk can be fun, but I truly enjoy the sport. If we weren't playing each other this year, I'd probably be cheering you guys on. Honestly, since we are playing you I want you to win all of your games (just not your first one haha).

I am not sure if you heard about last year's debacle with our band. They won the Sudler trophy the summer before the season and planned a big show for the first game. The show was Star Wars and Star Trek themed. I enjoyed the show, but unfortunately at one point they had the Enterprise fly at our main rival's mascot. Some people thought it looked like we were depicting an adult act and the situation went viral. As long as you weren't being mean spirited, we would definitely enjoy a jab from your band.

That's an awesome gif. And don't fool yourself that the kids weren't being cheeky in that show. It makes no sense to have the enterprise "penetrate" the jayhawk that way instead of using the photon torpedos to vanquish the fowl. But kuddos to those guys. I only wish our kids had done it.

Don't underestimate ones ability to take a satirical show as "mean spiritied" when ones team is down 3 TDs at half. Context is everything.
