As someone who make a lot of signs for games, I like this.

The name "Burns" works better.  To be topical, I can do a "Feel the Burns" one.  Or perhaps to appeal to the younger crowd, there can be a Mr. Burns reference.  Or anything using "burn" as a verb.

There's really only one word "Chryst" is similar too, and I ain't going there with a funny sign.  Even in the Bay Area, that's asking for it.

I thought comments from Shaw and Bloomgren had a hint of Burns playing better than Chryst lately (though if you press me I cannot back that up) and also thought that based upon the little bit that was available to be seen publicly Burns was on a better trajectory (behind last fall, even last spring, looking somewhat better this fall).

It will be interesting to see how much time Chryst actually gets. It seems to me that in the past Shaw had intentions of playing a backup of QB at least a moderate amount but in the heat of a game that rarely happened. I am sure he both wants Chryst to be ready if necessary and thinks it was a close enough competition that Chryst "deserves" some time - but it will still be hard to pull the trigger.

I'm also sure the motivation for Shaw is partially to keep Chryst engaged and around. But as to what Chryst does now, I guess that is the question for each and every QB who loses a competition to be the starter. The answer is as individual as the people.

This compares favorably to Hogan's career average rating of 154.5 or Luck's 162.8, and even Chryst's 147.3. Of course it doesn't approach McCaffrey's career 395.9 - don't know why he didn't get named QB starter.

* Burns acquired that rating on 1 completion in 1 attempt for 13 yards, 0 TDs, and 0 INTs.

Now that Shaw has decided on Burns as the starter I would think he would want to give him as much playing time as possible before he has to face U$C and the rest. So assuming he plays reasonably well against KSU, I wouldn't expect to see a lot of Chryst.

When I attend a practice in March, I just assumed Chryst would be the guy because he was #2 last season.  But Burns was just as impressive as Chryst, to my surprise.  Chryst is no slug for sure, but Burns is a slightly better runner.  If Chryst doesn't have a better grasp of the offense, doesn't show appreciably better decision-making, and isn't demonstrating greater accuracy on his throws, Burns would be the choice.  Given this, it's disappointing Chryst didn't win the job.  If he did, it would tell me he has greater accuracy and decision-making ability.  My confidence in the QB position just took a hit until Burns wins me over, because if Chryst isn't that accurate and it took this long for Burns to be named starter, he probably isn't all that accurate himself.  We'll see soon enough.

As for what Chryst does, who knows, but he's in the same class as Max Browne, who hasn't exactly lived up to his hype either.

Yeah, it would seem that redshirting a year, backing up Burns for a year, playing two years, getting his degree, and then heading off to the NFL would be an excellent scenario for Costello. He'll have to beat out Mills to do it, though.

Yeah, if Costello transfers because Burns won this competition it would be ... strange.

Isn't Chryst's uncle the head coach at University of Wisconsin?  I hate to see anyone leave Stanford for any reason, an there are no guarantees that Burns will be the answer for the next couple of years, but Wisconsin might be a school that Chryst would be strongly considering now.

How many blue chip recruits have careers that don't amount to much because they lose out on the QB competition? These guys know the game when they sign up with a top school that has a strong talent pipeline. But it has to be a hard pill to swallow.

I pointed this out upthread, but all last year he was saying that they needed to get Burns/Chryst into games and get real experience, and then just flat-out did not do that (they probably could've played 5X as many snaps as they did without costing us any chance at winning). So if Burns starts, I'd expect to see him in there for 90% of the snaps, even if we're winning handily.

I've talked to a fair number of coaches who've expressed the opinion that if two candidates for a prominent position are comparatively equal in ability -- catcher, setter, quarterback -- then they tend to go with the younger option, on the theory that there's a greater upside.  I wonder what's the case here...
