To me, the moral of the story is: Volunteering for kids activities can be very dangerous. When we were raising our daughter, my wife and I ran into unhinged parents several times. In one case, my wife was assaulted by another parent, a member of our city council, when helping out at a swim meet. After that, we stopped volunteering. People get crazy when their children are involved.
I've volunteered as a coach for about 20 youth sports teams. There's always at least one crazy or semi-crazy parent. One friend of mine was a very good coach, great with kids, very patient. He had one player who was losing control in the dugout, and he put a fatherly hand on his shoulder, calmed him down, game goes on. His mother, a Hooters waitress, reams him out publicly for "getting physical" with her son and goes to the board, threatens to sue unless my friend is dismissed.
I didn't coach that season, but I coached the next season. In the player draft, I drafted that man's son on my team, and told the LL board that he would be one of my assistant coaches. The president of the league says to me, "are you sure that's a good idea? You know about last season, right?" We discussed it, they gave their thumbs up. No issues during the season, except one of the crazed parents on my team reamed out one of the crazed parents on the other team for celebrating too loudly after a win...which in little league is very dog-bites-man.
