I'm the same person I always have been, yet last week my "respect score" was -2.  Then it went up to +4.  Today it's -1.  I have no idea what I'm saying that is appreciated and isn't.  But why should people be judged personally for what they believe and what their opinion is, anyway?

I've read plenty of posts with which I disagree since the respect system was integrated into this board, and I haven't once hit the " - " or " + " links on anyone IIRC.  I've had the impulse to, but don't because though I disagree or agree with with a post, I don't feel it's appropriate for me to respect anyone any more or any less based on a post they make, when they may have other things to say that I do agree with or don't.  But most importantly, doesn't everyone deserve to be respected?  Does anyone really want this board indicating who deserves more respect than others?

The like system on individual posts is so, so much better.  That allows a positive reinforcement on the individual posts people make that are appreciated, which is good or two reasons:

1. You know WTF post you made that was popular, so you can be sort of guided as to what the board community likes and doesn't
2. It doesn't call people out personally for exercising what might be an unpopular opinion

Today I respect you and tomorrow I don't?  What the hell?  We are so damn quick to judge and condemn people in this awful society we are creating for ourselves.  Why the need to make everything personal?  And isn't it ironic, or even a bit hypocritical that people who criticize the coaches or players have their respect levels downgraded by people who in turn judge posters in similar fashion to what they are taking umbrage to about coach and player criticism?

I like this board.  It's so tame and less combative than most if not all other message boards.  But the sanctimony and self-righteousness expressed passively through the Carboard is sometimes a little tough to take.  Deciding whether people should be respected more or less, based on their opinions does nothing to make this board better, IMO.  It seems like it would be much better to have a way of rating a post positively only, and prohibit any individual post or Cardboard member respect downgrading.

It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.  I think individual posts still record their net karma totals, so admins can see which posts need to be flagged, hidden, etc.  This is fairly useful.  But I'm certain that the purpose of the karma system is not to make us feel bad or to judge us as people.  And negative opinions are more often expressed--anger moves us more easily to downvote than agreement moves us to upvote, so I'd encourage you to do what I do and try not to pay attention to that number to the left  ::)

First, I wouldn't worry too much about the reputation system.  Perhaps it is a helpful shortcut for infrequent posters, but for any regular, I can't imagine it makes much of a difference.  If you read a poster enough times, you get a sense for how much insight they provide, their tone, biases, cobatitiveness, etc.  I don't give two hoots what my favorite posters' reputations are, I will read their stuff.  On the other hand, for people I know will provoke an eye-roll in me, if I read them, it will be knowing the context of their earlier posts.  In theory of course, I ought to read every post for its own sake, but it would be silly tho pretend that I am completely unbiased.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about your karma.  You make an important contribution to the board, even when you post a controversial opinion.

I wondered what that is and gave OF an upvote because I like his/her stuff.  (Think "his", but not completely sure.)  And apparently you can only take one karmic action per hour, so it looks like a long slog for me to single-handedly restore your good name my friend.

And BC is right.  As long as we are all civil enough, we can probably leave karma to tipping our collective wait staff generously.

Now, I do agree that for the system to be in any way helpful, it would be nice to know which of our posts has generated the + or -. I feel that as it currently sits, it's too easy for us to think "This poster is in the negative? Well they don't deserve that, let me + them" or vice versa, which I think defeats the purpose.

I'm between a rock and a hard place when it comes to adding features to the board. I recently discovered that adding a theme (i.e. template) to the board can prevent upgrading features. In addition, the old Good Post/Bad Post hadn't been updated to work since about 2.0.2, and as you can see, we're on 2.0.10. If I want to try to add features back, I'll have to strip off the template, which I don't want to do until the new year, after football season.

Ideally, the team working on the software would release 2.1, which has been in beta for over a year, possibly close to two years. Version 2.1 has a built-in Like system, so I wouldn't have to use any add-on mods. In addition, the counts would be reset to 0.

tbh, I'm really not paying attention to the respect numbers for any established member, as it doesn't really give any reliable information. I'm just using it as an additional tool for new, unknown members.

I agree that per post format would be better, but like Yvonne, I hardly ever glance at the number. I just find myself wanting to click a +1 often.

Hopefully those programmer dudes work it out someday soon, but if not, no big deal.
