My wife has related to me that a Cal alum coworker of hers is complaining about Stanford's attendance on Saturday. Not that there were too many Stanford fans, mind you, but rather that there were too few. Who on earth complains about too few visiting fans showing up? I'd also be interested in seeing a "percentage of butts in allocated seats" between the fanbases, the visitors section looked mighty full to me, and the rest of the bowl seemed pretty darn empty...

For those of us on both sides who remember a full CMS with the visible blue/red 60/40 split (or thereabouts), the tiny visitor section is just one vestige of lost tradition, regardless of how full it may or may not have been.

Says the wuss who stayed home and watched with his Calfan wife on TV after shopping for fireplace inserts.  (There are personal reasons beyond shopping time and weather.) The only section that looked full on TV was the Cal student section.  At least until the waning moments.

And that axe staredown is hilarious.  Never saw that before, because I used to always be in the stadium.  Louis Johnson made a point the the axe was chained to two students, so there wouldn't be any funny business. Like those two students couldn't just be bum rushed into a waiting shag carpeted perv van?

There have been a few Axe staredowns with committee members trying to hold back tears and failing.  It's much better when the rally committee is doing the crying.

Given that there were many thousands of empty seats in the C.al sections, I don't think C.al fans have any business complaining about Stanford's attendance at the Big Game.

CMS was not really 60/40 Blue/Red, likely more like 70/30 but same idea.  Big full stadium with 20,000 - 25,000+ fans supporting each program at either venue.  That was largely true even as recently as 20 years ago.  Then Stanford's red at CMS started to drop.  Cal dropped at Stanford too, but not as much. 

Then Stanford declared the new Stanford Stadium would only hold 50,000 and UCBers were up in arms about the limited BG seats. 

However for recent BGs at Stanford UCBers have been hard pressed to fill even 5,000 seats.  Oregon, USC, and Notre Dame all travel to Stanford Stadium in bigger numbers.

Stanford will always have the small undergrad population excuse.  UCB has fewer easy excuses.  Seemed like the trendy thing now if for UCBers to wear blue while walking around town, but then not actually get tickets for the game.  After the game I was drenched, cold and tired and it seemed like there were quite a number of really dry and comfortable looking UCBers going to dinner and walking around campus and town.  It was very hard for me to believe any of them had just spent 3-4 hours in CMS.

For this last Big Game it seemed to me that Stanford only had 4 or 5 sections.  No doubt Stanford used to have a bigger crowd in the day.  FWIW - UCB used to have three of four sections of students, but at this Big Game it was a section and a half tops.  And those kids all got pizza if they stayed until the 4th quarter.

I think they need a new stadium over there.  As the current stadium looks really dated.  ;D

What they need to do is tear the whole thing out.  Build a new stadium with better lighting, better seats, more bathrooms and ample parking nearby.  That might help.  With all the alums they have, it SHOULD be easy to get the funds for CMS 3.0!

The Stanford section while small in recent years since their makeover (from mid southside endzone wrapped round to  eastside's ~5 yard line), was nevertheless well filled. Mrs FrankO and I wore rain gear so the rain wasn't really a factor for us... nor for most of the other hardy Stanford fans attending... who simply gutted it out. Terry2 correct...  big attendance holes in the westside ןɐɔ section under the elevated pressbox/skybox area.  Their student section chock full.  Missed our Band, but ןɐɔ Band did a good job.

I thought the Stanford turnout wasn't too bad -- I'd say a greater proportion of Stanford tix turned out than 59er tix.
