Best OL/DL as voted by opposing DL/OL. It's a pretty cool award, I wonder if other conferences do that.

Someone asked me this question a couple weeks ago, and I felt that while McCaffrey was a tossup, Thomas seemed more likely to come back. Linemen carry a much lower injury risk, and there's much more potential for growth. (After all, McCaffrey had nothing more to prove.) Thomas will get bigger and stronger, and he could end up in the top half of the 2018 draft should he stay. Recently, though, I'm hearing that he's looking into the 2017 draft and could leave if he receives a favorable review from the league. If he comes back, though -- just imagine the defensive front. Kind of ferocious.
Please clear the field! The game is not over!

Conversely, I've seen him pegged as a first/second rounder if he were to come out this year. I wouldn't begrudge him for leaving, should he choose to. It wouldn't be like Rector's decision to leave last year (which he obviously reversed), which was a head scratcher to me.

Couple of historical notes: Solomon Thomas is the second Stanford defensive lineman to win the award in the trophy's history. Beginning in 2012, a Stanford lineman has won the award every year (except for 2013).
