Yale - When I was applying to colleges back in the 20th century, I applied to Yale as well as Stanford.  I was a pretty good WR in my home state of New Mexico.  That's equivalent to being a pretty good cowboy in Maine.  I had no illusions about being a competitive athlete at the D1 level.  Ivy - maybe.

I got a nice hand written note from the legendary Yale Football coach, Carmen Cozza.  "I hope you will come to Yale and play for us."

I chose Stanford.  So I played on the JV squad at Stanford.  This was before freshman could play on varsity.  On that JV team we had (I think) 8 men who went on to play pro ball.  Two were first rounders, James Lofton and Gordy King.

I survived that season with only one concussion.  Spent the night at the student health center.  The concussion made me forget every class I was taking.  Late November and I didn't remember what classes I was taking or what I had learned.  I called my room mate and asked him what books were on my book shelf to see if that make me remember.  All I remember is asking, "Meteorology, why would anyone take that course?"

Next day everything was back and I knew that I was completely out of my league.

The next week I bluffed my way into playing in the last game against Cal.  "Doctors say I am good to go."  In reality I had never consulted the doctors at the student health center after I was released.  I caught 1 pass.  I was in the books.

Ivy's get superior academic and respectable athletes.  Stanford gets superior academic and superior athletes.  That's a pretty hard screen to pass through.  That is why the current recruiting class is so exceptional.

Speaking of Brennan Scarlett, if he ever started and they did one of those televised introductions, I wonder what school he would claim. He had a better career in his one year at Stanford than in his four across the Bay, but something tells me he'd say C.al. If so, I'd understand.
