I think that there are comments in there worth looking at, though mostly they point in the direction of the coaches being much less insightful (at least whomever they got to comment for the article).

My guess is that whomever said this vaguely remembered there was a safety at Stanford who was pretty good. He went to the roster, found the most senior guy (by class) at a safety position and came up with Simmons. (Though Franklin is also a senior, he has played even less.)
Of course it would be a great story, and good development, if indeed it turns out that Simmons becomes a top player at safety.

These comments underscore something I've thought for quite a while. How many Division I teams are there now, 128? Even they're only paying attention to the top halves of the Power 5 conferences, national analysts -- and opposing coaches, apparently -- can never know a team as much as the people who follow it religiously. There are any number of people on this board who could write a Stanford preview that's much better than anything you'll find in any of the national magazines. It's just a question of time and priority.

And that's why the SB Nation/Scout/Rivals model (creating a home for a specific set of fans) works so well. But SB Nation has really executed on it and gotten traction.

Agreed: The publications that purport to cover all the teams cannot adequately cover any of the teams.Â
