1. Alfieri is new to the position, so the coaches felt that he had to clearly demonstrate in game conditions that he deserves to be the top guy.
2. Tyler is our best "speed" receiver and Shaw felt the need to have a guy like that in the two deep.

Alfieri, to my eyes, was their best linebacker last year. So whether he starts are not, he should be on the field a lot. If not, he should not have been moved.

Ancient Indian, I'm hoping that the old cliche about the size of the fight in the man means that Tyler is The Man at his position. There are some very tough small players who have come out of St. Augustine.

They are still pretty tough, albeit a bit slow and overweight.  Our starting center, Burkett, however, is neither slow or overweight and is a tough local boy.

I really liked the Jay Tyler recruitment given that he played QB and was all everything at his HS in Louisiana.  I thought he might play early as a 3rd down guy or returner but with Mac and Love, it was not to be.  Since he did not make any impact his first few years, I then felt he might end up being a dud.  If my initial impressions were more accurate than my revised ones, I will be pretty happy.  I understand that at WR there is quite a rotation during the game and 3 or 4 guys play substantially but Stewart apparently impressed enough last year to have his true frosh redshirt burned which is unusual for a wideout.  To see him replaced by Tyler at this point was a true surprise to me, but I will be ecstatic if it works out to our great advantage.

The surprise I expressed was more of a coaches' perception/attitude thing - it's rare that you see upper classmen disappear like that.
I also watch a lot of Stanford tape. I would take the intermediate view that while Perez clearly struggled at times, he wasn't a unique problem to the degree that this board appeared to believe.

Unfortunately, the Pac-12 network has gone squirrelly about making past games available. It used to be that every game the Pac 12 had the rights to became available about a month after the original broadcast, now I see only six available from 2016: Rice, Arizona, Colorado, WSU, UCLA, Kansas St. Youtube has about 8 or 9 games from last season available to anyone, including all of those missing from the list above.

Lately, I have been rewatching the Rice game, preparing to crush the prediction game round 1.

Regarding Alfieri's switch to ILB, I think it is telling that Kevin Palma, who began as a starter last year, is now a backup; we are looking for more speed and coverage ability it seems. However, it is surprising that Mustafa Branch, the only freshman LB not to redshirt two years ago, is still not a starter...

Branch has shined since his frosh year on special teams kickoff coverage, and I think that is the reason he played as a frosh.  His type of play may be better suited to that open kickoff environment than the structure required of playing ILB.

Last year, being a "starting" ILB didn't actually mean you played the majority of snaps. I would hesitate to read too much into the depth chart, and I would assume Perez is not listed because he's hurt (similar to JJAW).
