Many people, self included, derided the "musical OL" that got Stanford off to a 1-2 start this season. But ever since then, it's been 4 wins in a row, with some tremendous OL performances. It culminated against Oregon, as at one point Stanford was playing LT #3, who also happened to start the season as LT #1.Â
It seems there might have been a method to the early season madness in terms of developing depth on the OL. But I think more importantly, you have to really give Bloomgren a lot of credit for accomplishing his 2017 goal. Ever since Spring, he said his top priority was to improve pass protection. I don't have the stats for sacks per pass attempt, but Stanford is now #9 in fewest sacks allowed per game with its now 4-game sack not allowed streak, and seems on track to be even better in the second half of the season. After a shaky start to the year, it's hard to think there is a better OL in the country right now.Â
Even the offense itself - for which Bloomgren is OC - seems to be more dynamic now. Really liked how they mixed it up against Oregon. It seems like a little thing, but the slant passes to Wedington and Stewart were great to see. Now just need some crossing routes in the middle of the field (which should be more available with great pass protection), and all I'll be able to gripe about is the run defense!
