I'm a layman when it comes to this kind of stuff but it would seem to be in the best interest of ESPN to keep the maximum number of fan bases believing their team still has a "path to the CFP." Keeps more people tuning in to listen to hot takes.

CFP is theoretically possible if we go 5-0, but I'm focused on being 1-0 tomorrow.

WSU is, or at least was, good but not "Elite". We need to beat a team like that to have any business discussing CFP.

2) That being said, 538 gives us roughly a coin toss chance (56%) of making the playoff if we win out.
3) And/but we have to win out and they only give us a 6% chance of doing that.
