Given the current roster math (3 scholarship juniors, 2 sophomores, and 2 freshmen), there is just one scholarship available for next year's team. And yesterday, blue chip and current #8 overall recruit Sara Choy grabbed it. She's local, and not just because she attends Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton. She was born here, at Stanford Hospital a few months before Lele became head coach. Here's the article about her commitment: https://www.tennisrecruiting.net/article...=247143208
She's small (4'11.5" as she says), which leads her to be something of a counterpuncher, using tactics when she can't overwhelm with raw power. Without having the benefit of having seen her play, that sounds something like our own Emma Higuchi, and I will take more like her any chance I can get.Â
Barring an early departure (a dominant season at #1 could convince Melissa Lord she's ready to take the next step, and I've already resigned myself to the fact that we probably won't get four years from Michaela Gordon), this should be the end of recruiting this cycle, as we now have 8 scholarships committed for next year.Â
Welcome, Sara!Â
