not sure about those numbers, my friend's kids all seem to apply to at least 10 and some as many as 20 schools......

Might depend on your socioeconomic status.

My older kid's middle/high school is an inner-city public charter with special emphasis on kids who might be the first in their family to go to college.

My kids' school is also recommending teh 1 safety, 2-3 primary target, and 2-3 reach schools.  My daughter is applying to 6-7 schools.

I tutor kids in Cupertino on preparing their college essays. Keep in mind, these kids are more motivated and wealthier than average college entrants. They apply to the UC's as a unit, and most apply to 3-4. Some of the weaker students will apply to an equal number of CSU's. Others will apply to an equal number of out of state flagships (Illinois, Washington, and Texas are the most popular). Then, you'll see 2-4 private schools (MIT, USC, occasionally CalTech). So, I'd put the number closer around 10-12, even for the hypercompetitive students.

Next year, it may be running back by committee, which may actually not be better. Cal could be lots better next year because they get some injured players back, including some wide receivers that could be great. However, the increased expectations could cause some disruption. Right now, Wilcox probably has everyone's trust and attention. Might not be true next year. It will be interesting to watch.

Texting with my BIL who's a Cal alum last night, when we realized the UCLA-Cal game will determine who plays in a bowl, my immediate instinct is that we should all root hard for UCLA. I worry that a 1st year bowl game with the promotion and extra practices will be too well used by Wilcox and his staff.

Sounds like my kids' experience.  Their high school recommended eight, two safety schools, two reach schools, and four "target" schools with a range of qualities.

True enough! Laird looks like he might be the "real deal". However, he isn't real big, so he really isn't a Toby type runner. He is more like Gaffney, but is 20 pounds lighter. What will be interesting to me is what happens when all of Cal's backs are available. Will Laird get lots of reps, or will he get squeezed out? It isn't obvious to me what will happen, or even what should happen. That is one reason I am not sure what to expect from Cal next year. Could be lots better, but may not be if they can't figure their personnel out.
