I thought the fourth down play from their own side of the field was the gutsiest call and the most decisive (minus the Brady fumble), not the fourth down play for the TD.

Well, given that the Eagles' defense had been incapable of stopping the Patriots, I thought the Eagles pretty much had to go for it on 4th down. With the way that game was going, they just couldn't risk putting the game in the hands of their defense.

It wasn't that he was wrong (twice); it was how sure he was that he was right. It's one thing if he says, "I don't think that's a catch, but it is close. The ruling will be dependent on whether the refs saw enough to consider Ertz to have completed the catch"; it's another to say "this should be overturned". I think on the Ertz catch, he reaches the ball out to have it cross the plane, which should be a "football move", no?
On the decision to go for it...
Pederson has been the most aggressive coach in going for it all season; I think I posted a link that he has some analytics guys who calculate the percentages for him in real time and tell him what the numbers say (from the article, it sounds like they give him a "green", "yellow" or "red" on going for it. He has the ultimate responsibility for calling it. On that particular call, I agree with Terry. The 50 or so added yards that he would have gotten from a punt probably decreased New England's chances of scoring from 90% to 85%. On the other hand, converting the fourth down increased the chances of Philadelphia scoring on that drive from 0% to 40%. The chances of converting were >50%. It was a no brainer.

Collinsworth was annoying on Sunday, but he isn't my least favorite announcer. I've always found Jon Gruden to be unnervingly like the graduate TA in my Poli Sci seminar who was so anxious to impress the professor that he monopolized the class with bafflegab.(Of course he has other things to do now, so I won't have to listen to him...)
