Martyup,
As fond as I am of Ed McCaffrey,
I think Ed someday being a head coach at Stanford is highly unlikely.
First of all, as great as Ed was and is, not every great player will be a great coach. I think of it like how not every great contributor will be a great manager. It helps that Ed has football experience at the highest levels, but I think only a tiny percentage of players also happen to have the qualities to be run an organization, to motivate, to recruit and manage a staff, and to convince great kids to come, not to mention all the topics related to the xs and os.
Second, they listed Eds experience coaching 10 years of Little League, and that this is his first HC gig. Although I do think LL experience is very relevant to be a high school coach (I was an asst LL coach last year), it shows how late Ed is coming to coaching. Even though they were on the same team in 90-91, Ed is actually a little *older* than Shaw.
My guess is that this job is about Eds kids, his love of football, and his commitment and love for his community and local school.
Lucky for them.
In terms of *future* Stanford coaches, and hopefully not for a long long time, it may be more likely that if a McCaffrey someday becomes the Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football, his name will be Christian.
