Today at 1:30pm, Stanford (still ranked #1 for the moment, though that will certainly change with next week's updated rankings) returns home to lick its wounds against St. Mary's, in its only match of the weekend. As far as I know, we're still missing Melissa Lord (whose absence turned what should have been a close match against Vanderbilt into a rout the likes of which this team rarely endures), so hopefully she'll be back soon.
St. Mary's preview:
I'm not going to spill much ink here. They got crushed by UCLA last weekend, and Stanford will beat them handily. But just like with the SJSU opener, perhaps our choppy early season performance continues and St. Mary's steals a point. No ranked singles players, but they have a ranked doubles team (at #51), so they could keep things close there. There shouldn't be much suspense here, but at #2 singles, Clementine Clement (great name) took UCLA's Terri Fleming to a third set when the match was abandoned, so perhaps she'll give Gordon or Arbuthnott a run, depending on how the lineup looks.Â
How to follow: You can live stream the match here, though hopefully the live scoring has been fixed since it wasn't working for the men's matches against USC and UCLA last weekend: http://streamingtennis.com/Cardinal/index.html
Rankings update:
January 31 team rankings:
Ranked: #1 (though we'll drop, perhaps considerably based on the thrashing we suffered against Vanderbilt, and we'd have no right to complain)
Past opponent watch: #2 Vanderbilt (though they'll rise to #1 next week, presumably, beating Baylor and then rolling us)
Future opponent watch:
#3 Florida (lost 4-1 to Florida State, will drop)
#6 Pepperdine (beat UCSB 7-0)
#11 Texas (lost to Illinois, surprisingly, but beat Northwestern)
#13 UCLA (beat St. Mary's)
#14 Cal (beat San Diego State and Santa Clara, both by 5-2 scores, which should be concerning for Cal, as I would've expected sweeps)
#20 Arizona State (beat UNLV 4-2 and Gonzaga 4-0)
#24 Washington (beat Fresno State 5-2 and Denver 5-2; UW lost the doubles point and at #2 singles in both matches)
Elsewhere in the Pac-12, USC had the week off, Oregon beat Georgia State but lost a competitive match to #7 Georgia Tech, Arizona beat a couple of bad teams, CU won a close one over Air Force, Utah beat Minnesota and DePaul, and Wazzu beat Purdue.Â
