Crazy stat, Farm07! I would never have guessed they'd lost their last 6 in OT. WOW. And while I could think of better teams to take them down than Notre Lame, I'll tip my (Leprechaun) hat to them for doing the whole nation a solid.
That said, I don't see them fading from being at the top of the pre-season list anytime soon. It's notable that their senior classes the past two years have been historically weak for UConn standards and somewhat disguised because they were bookended by the Stewart/Jefferson/Tuck 2016 class and the KLS/Collier 2019 class. Last year's only senior was Saniya Chong, who was the no. 75 recruit, and as a result UConn's recruiting class wasn't even ranked that year. This year's senior class was ranked 4 at the time of signing, but since then both Sadie Edwards and Courtney Ekmark have transferred (to USC and ASU, respectively), and only Nurse (ranked 33rd) and Williams (ranked 14th) remained, so they probably would have been ranked closer to 15th. Two years of recruiting classes like that looks a bit like what we had this year - 10th for our senior class (before Rooks, our highest ranked recruit, transferred) and unranked for our junior class. So it's not surprising that UConn hasn't fared that much better in the post-season, because most of their best talent has been underclassmen, just like us.
Unfortunately, UConn's freshman class was loaded and their class next year features the dynamic duo of Williams and Nelson-Ododa, who both tore it up at the McD's game earlier this week. With those two, plus Duke-transferee Stevens, plus hungry seniors KLS and Collier, and Dangerfield and Walker, I don't see how they're not the odds on favorites to win next year.

2006alum, unfortunately, you are right. To see the cloud in the silver lining, despite those "deficiencies" that you pointed out, it took a buzzer beater in OT the last 2 years to beat UConn. The only hope is that a) these two losses show that they are not invincible and will give teams, especially other top teams that they can beat the Huskies and b) it will take time for Christyn Williams and Olivia Nelson-Ododa to adjust to the collegiate game. UConn will need to replace Nurse and Gabby Williams in starting roles so underclassmen might have to take on significant minutes and that might leave them vulnerable to inexperience.

Someone on the UConn board pointed out that all 9 of UConn's most recent championships has been because they've been lead by either Taurasi, Moore or Stewart. Teams without one of those all-time greats have won nothing. There was some hope that #1 in her class Samuelson would be one of those players but she didn't play in the final her freshman year (Stewart's senior year) and she is 0 for 2 in the last two years. Some thought #1 in her class Walker would be one of those players but Geno didn't even let her on the court during the final four. Here's hoping that UConn continues to miss on getting those truly great players.

In fact, if you look at their other 2 national titles (1995 and 2000), in 1995, an all-time great Rebecca Lobo led that team to their first undefeated season. I don't know much about their 2000 roster, but it appears that team was the only one which wasn't led by a superstar player. I feel like this analysis is a little tautalogical. From the standpoint of their college careers, the reason they are all-time greats is in large part that they won championships.
And it's hard to discount the role of others on those teams. IMHO, UConn was hurt more this season by not having a top true point guard like Moriah Jefferson than it was from lacking a shooting forward like Stewwie, because KLS and Collier are both very much in the Stewwie mold, Dangerfield is not yet Jefferson, and Nurse is really more of a shooting guard. Jefferson won every championship Stewwie did, so who's to say what that team would have looked like without her?
Similarly, UConn won Maya Moore's sophomore and junior years but not her senior year. One reason why is because Tina Charles had graduated the year prior, and so UConn won Charles's junior and senior years but didn't have as reliable a post presence in 2011 when they lost to Notre Dame in the final four.
So you could just as easily say that UConn only won when Jefferson and Charles were on the teams. At the end of the day, what a winning team needs is multiple top upperclassmen on the floor. UConn hasn't had that the past two years. It had it x3 with Stewwie, Jefferson, and Tuck. We had it in 2008-2012 (the Wiggins and Appel through Ogwumike x2 years)Â and just couldn't quite get it done any of those years.

Well, Notre Dame had a dreadful second quarter and Mississippi State had a dreadful third quarter, and the two are tied at 41 after 3 quarters. I think I am rooting for Mississippi State, given that I can't see us competing for the same recruits with them, but I can with Notre Dame.

Agreed, watching the replay of the two turnovers, I thought there was a clear foul on the MSU player that had the ball and lost it when the ND player caused her to trip.
I hope this doesn't affect our recruiting chances with any players

Maybe it's false comfort just for myself, but if you are a top recruit, how much does a team winning a national title sway you? If ND had lost on a buzzer beater to Mississippi State, it's not like someone would say, "oh, they lost the title game on a miracle shot, guess I should go somewhere else." It's obviously something Muffet can promote and brag about, but that recruit had no role in winning that title. Am I wrong?

Being recruited by a National Champion coach and team could be a magical attraction for many an 18 year old.
