In the case of the former, what did he do in college? In the case of the latter, there's the problem of the former being more famous. You almost have to do something else with 7, the way Notre Dame reserves the number 3 for exceptional quarterbacks.

I thought it was old people who lost their memory. I'll have to call on Terry for the actual facts here, but I believe he (Elway, not Terry) set all sorts of passing, total offense and TD marks while playing on the other side of the ball from one of the worst Stanford defenses in history. He was a 2-or-possibly-3-time All American playing for another nice-guy-but-bad-coach. The aforementioned defense and coach, by the way, cost him the Voldemort Trophy by the slimmest of margins. Herschel Walker? Puh-le-e-e-e-e-ze!!

I'd think so too.  Broke all kinds of records, probably going to break more.  Won a BCS game while leading team a near perfect record.

I think #7 should definitely be retired, and it doesn't matter that it would be for Elway and Toby. The Yankees, for instance, retired #8 for Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra. They simply hung the number 8 twice along with the other retired jerseys.

As for Luck, the argument is pretty simple. I think most people would agree that even if he hadn't come back for this final season he would still at least have been included in the conversation when discussing the greatest Cardinal players of all time. Even if he only matches last season's totals this fall -- and takes home the Voldemort in a landslide -- I'd be comfortable listing him as the best to ever wear the Cardinal and White -- again, in a landslide. If all that happens, the only question is how tall you make the statue. The jersey should definitely be retired.

I'm with Garvin on this one.  It's too early to talk about retiring #12 and too early for porn.  Andrew's decision to return is a wonderful example of a Stanford student athlete making a well thought out decision on his future.  I think it's great for him, for the university, the team and obviously for us as fans! 

I hope he has a Voldemort worthy year and that we are debating this question of retiring his number in New Orleans in January.  This is going to be one fantastic season and I plan to enjoy every minute of it!
