Here we are, exactly 2/3 of the way through the season, at .500.  I think the most telling stat is that our leading RBI guy has 43.  Now to be fair, there are 3 other guys within 40-42.  But when your RBI leader projects to about 65, your offense truly sucks.  Yes, they added speed in Hanson and Duggar, and McCutchen can run, but this is still a bunch of plodders that have to string together 3 hits to get a run more often than not.

Sad to say that Buster is probably too dinged up to ever again be the player he was once was.  The guy's still hitting .290, but with little of the power the lineup desperately needs.

Interestingly enough, Panda looks like our most productive RBI guy, 40 RBI in just 230 ABs.  

Also interesting that Crawford, Hernandez and now D'Arnaud (who doesn't seem to have ever done much at this level) are having career years at the plate and we still can't mount much of a threat.

Here's the question for today's deadline:  would you rather have Hernandez or McCutchen playing every day in RF?  If Slater looks like a keeper, I wonder if some team (maybe an AL contender) wants to rent McCutchen for 2 months.

And who do you think would win a home-to-first footrace between Crawford, Panik, Belt, Posey, Longoria and Panda?  Granted the lefties have a small advantage out of the box.

I don’t have the link handy but I read an article the other day that compared their home-first footspeed in terms equivalent to feet/second. The Giants cited in the article were in the range of “below league average for the position” to “one of the slowest”. Panik in particular apparently really slow.

Of course playing Hanson, who is one of our fastest guys, sacrifices a lot on defense.

Cherry picking expensive contracts is stupid.  Cain earned his contract.  Zito justified his in one start (IMO, World Series titles are worth more than a hundred million - just ask any Cubs fan).  Cueto - the jury is out - it depends on the last two years.  

If you are going to rail about long term expensive contracts, you need to include Crawford, Posey, Pence, etc. etc.  Oh wait, those were good deals...

This is a transition year, I like the direction the team is taking.  I like the significantly improved farm system.  I like the addition of youth in the rotation and OF.  Next year, the rotation will be anchored by Rodriguez, Suarez and Bumgarner.  I expect deals in the off season to add to that core.  I also expect SF to go after a big bat.
