Baltimore Colts former star TE John Mackey died today at age 62. NFL football gave him fame, an award for the best TE named after him, and brain damage. His gift to football was delivered by his wife, who worked tirelessly to get the NFL, players and America in general to recognize the damage done by years of cumulative head trauma. Mackey suffered severe early-onset dementia and some courageous doctors were also involved in stating for the record that there was a link between the violence to which football players subject themselves and that dementia. Since Mackey, through his wife, went public, several other prominent NFL veterans have revealed, essentially, the same problems in their retirement years. But...somebody has to be first and players owe Mackey a debt for being the first whistleblower on a not-so-secret secret.
