In today's Rose Bowl, early in the game and deep in OSU's territory, Washington caught OSU substituting a whole bunch of players and tried to snap the ball with only about four defenders in position. The SEC officials stopped the play to allow the substitution, even though Washington didn't substitute anyone. Peterson was understandably irate. Washington ended up settling for a field goal, when a touchdown may have been well within their grasps, especially given OSU wasn't ready. Could have been a game changer, especially considering how close the game ended.

I was curious about that call as well.  It appeared that the ref was saying that the UW receiver ran out of bounds on the UW sideline on the previous play.  When he came back onto the field of play, they considered that a substitution.  I'm not sure if the rule addresses that situation.  If not, it should.

Seemed to me like Ohio State totally dominated most of the game, certainly the first half, so I don't know that one play or possession would have made a significant difference. Then again I never expected Washington to find away to make the final score close (which they did).

You might be right, that  Washington could have gained some momentum.
I'm still trying to figure out the prior game, Penn State vs Kentucky. Penn State opted for a field goal with 2 minutes remaining and down by 6 points.

You might be right, that  Washington could have gained some momentum.
I'm still trying to figure out the prior game, Penn State vs Kentucky. Penn State opted for a field goal with 2 minutes remaining and down by 6 points.

I think plays early on can change momentum etc. But I also remember reading a quote from Sammy Baugh (maybe the greatest all time around football player). The Redskins had lost to the Bears 73-0 in a Championship game. It remains the largest margin of victory. Early on in a 0-0 game a redskin receiver dropped a sure TD pass. Baugh was asked if it would have made a difference. His response: “Yes, we would have lost 73-7.”

OSU is a significantly better team. So I just don’t see that call making a real difference.

Actually there were more than 4 minutes remaining and they had 3 timeouts left. Not completely indefensible. The problem was they could not keep Kentucky from getting 2 first downs running the ball.
