You're absolutely right.  I should have been more clear that the bowls are all about TV money for the conferences.

I wonder about this across all universities. It seems like so many schools operate money-losing athletic departments and have for so long that it isn't really an issue. You almost never see an AD lose a job over this.

It's kind of a great appeal to donors to send money to help the poor teams. 

And given the difficulties of separating all of the facilities, employees, and resources of the athletic department from each university as a whole, this may just be a lot of accounting differences on the cost side.
