For background on the SMU case and the Death Penalty, ESPN made an excellent documentary in their ESPN 30 for 30 series, entitled, "Pony Excess" which details, among several things, that the South, particularly in Texas, were world class in their cheating.
One of my takeaways from all of this is that some of the top programs, especially in the South, have perfected cheating to an art form. They know how to cheat very carefully so they can get away with it. They are experts at cheating. They have perfected the politics to place their people in positions of influence (including elected officials, e.g., State Governor) and be able to apply pressure on the system when needed. And they know how to use the system to take out their competitors. And they spend LOTS of money.
