Was at today's Open House scrimmage. Lots of fans and lots of fun. Team looked good and the individual athletes look really good.

Aside from the obvious - thought Brett Nottingham looked the best at QB2. Robbie Picazo didn't look good. I haven't seen a lot but from just today - I'd pick Nottingham as #2. Our two freshmen - Evan Crower and Kevin Hogan both looked good.

Our freshmen running backs Remound Wright and Kelsey Young looked good with several good runs. Fast, quick, strong. We're stacked at RB. Ricky Seale looked good too with a few long runs and catches.

Levine Toilolo is of extremely large proportions - he looks tall amongst the linemen but when he breaks into the defensive backfield - oh my! He's a giant! Seems to be moving well with braces on knees.

Chris Owusu is looking smooth and fast. Didn't see him turn on the jets yet. Can't wait to see. Also at WR - Ty Montgomery looks good. Fast and big - perhaps deceptively fast. Ran him on a reverse. Had him returning kicks and punts. Seems like they like him a lot. Jamal-Rashad Patterson looked good too - but had a few errors/penalties that took away from his performance. Corey Gatewood and Jemari Roberts had some good catches too.

Shayne Skov's mohawk is gone - but he's still a beast inside. James Vaughters looked quick and somewhat explosive on the runs but at times seem lost on the pass plays. He's definitely the real deal and I expect him in the lineup soon - but he looks like he's still on a learning curve.

Wayne Lyons at CB looked good too. Aggressive. Athletic. Like him.

Still a bit concerned about our Line play on both sides of the ball. Think it just takes time to gel - but our run blocking isn't as dominating as it was last year. Defensive line looked OK - but not as tough as last year, especially on the pass rush. We'll see.

Kicker - Jordan Williamson looked very good. Think this could become an area of strength for us. Has a very strong leg which delivers a very high, long kick. Punting didn't impress.

Anyway -  that's my data dump off the top of my head.

I notice that the official write-up didn't spend much time talking about the running game. That doesn't sound good for a team that's going to "come off the bus running power."

Stanford's deep stable of running backs also showed well today. Freshmen Kelsey Young and Remound Wright gained 52 and 25 yards, respectively, while Anthony Wilkerson had 16 and Tyler Gaffney finished with 14.

"Our running backs, all the way down to our freshmen, played really well. We have outstanding depth at that position."

None of them had particularly interesting stats, but combined they rushed for 107 yards. Luck threw for 117. Basically an even split there. Then there's Shaw's comments on Luck:

"Andrew is the same everyday - very consistent," said Shaw. He manages the game very well. What I love about him is he gets into a situation like today and doesn't think he needs to throw the ball on every down. He doesn't care about statistics or run-pass ratio. He just wants to manage the game and make good decisions."

This is still a running team.

Tangentially, I'm guessing Vaughters is on the Shayne Skov learning curve--plays a bench role through the first part of the season, then in Week 6 or so starts really making an impact. The play I knew Skov was going to be Skov was against Oregon, where he just buried Kenjon Barner on a screen. We'll know whether Vaughters will be something really good for real around that time, I'll bet.

I'm dialing down my expectations based on the team's inability to run the ball. I had thought the two anchor guys would be enough to remain a strong running team.

Another possible interpretation of this is that maybe this team is just deeper than previous editions. My guess is that while there's historically been a brobdingnagian drop from the first to the second team, that gap has gotten much smaller with the type of talent that's come in over the past two to three years. Maybe that's why the first team isn't dominating the second team as much as expected. At least that's what I choose to believe.

I agree with the position that it will take time for the OL to gel, particularly because we haven't settled on our starting group so they haven't worked together much yet. I'm not worried either, especially because a lot of them have seen significant playing time.

The area I'm more anxious about seeing develop is our DL. Eventually, we have to stop the run game from Oregon, as well as SCs and Notre Dame, etc. Sione Fua was a beast and looks like he might start for the Panthers this year. I have confidence that they will develop but looking forward to see it once the season starts.
