Niners allow second fewest ppg in NFL at 11.0. Patriots #1 at 7.6.
Niners are #6 in offense at 387.3 ypg. Cowboys #1 at 437.9.

Freddie Kitchens as HC of the Browns is the 2019 version of Jim Tomsula as HC of the Niners in 2015. The guy is in way over his head. All you need to do is watch the Browns play and you can see how much talent they have, and how poorly they are coached. They would be a much better team with better coaching. Mayfield has regressed substantially, but he has the potential to be a very capable NFL QB, based on his attributes.
Some teams lose games because they have talented coaching but not talented players. Some teams lose games because despite having talented players they lack coaching talent. The Browns are the latter example. The Niners under Shanahan in his first two years were an example of the former.

As I recall, it was 4th and 20+, so going for it would have been a real long shot. Of course, I think the punt went into the end zone netting us 12 yards in field position, which USC regained on their first play from scrimmage. I’m not sure on the math, but probably the long field goal made the most sense.
By the way, Shaw did it again against Northwestern. He passed on a 50-yard field goal and elected to punt. Then, with time expiring in the first half, Shaw elected to have Toner kick the field goal from the exact same spot, which he easily converted.

If Luck passes and the ball is intercepted, Shaw has forfeited a golden opportunity to win the game. In my opinion, it was good coaching decisions but poor player execution in that moment. And even still, the game went to overtime but OSU had the momentum and they simply outplayed Stanford.
The Chicago Bears, on the other hand, were down one to SD. Trubisky scrambled to the 21 yard-line then took a knee which lost about 3 yards. At the least, they should have done a QB sneak to not lose yards and maybe even get inside the 20. So, yeah, that one is a head-scratcher.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

That was one painful game. My memory is that Bill Connelly called it the least likely outcome of the year based upon the overall stats for the game.
Every Stanford drive of the game ended in $C territory, though only 10 points.
Drive #1 had a blocked FG from the $C 32 that seems to have spooked Shaw on FGs.
Drive #2 had a punt from the $C 29, it was fourth and 22.
To start the second half another missed FG from the $C 9.
Then later after a TD completion was called back on a (questionable) chop block there was a punt from the $C 32, on fourth and 13.
There was also a failed fourth and 1 from the $C 3, and two fumbles deep in $C territory.
Yuck.

29 yard line makes it a 46-yard field goal, which while no gimme (probably a 50/50 proposition for a good college kicker) is definitely “in range”. No question, he should have kicked the field goal, which had an expected point value of between 1 and 2. Punting, even if we had pinned SC at the 1, was ridiculously stupid.
