Episode Highlighting Stanford Band Coming on the Field During 1982 “Big Game” to Debut on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2:00 PM, ET on the CBS Television Network

The third season of CBS Sports’ “Four Sides of the Story” franchise concludes with “The Band is on the Field!” on Saturday, Nov. 30 (2:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. 

The documentary, which is the last of five original programs produced by CBS Sports celebrating the 150th anniversary of college football, leads into THE DRIVE TO ATLANTA (2:30 PM, ET), COLLEGE FOOTBALL TODAY (3:00 PM, ET) and the SEC on CBS “Game of the Week” between No. 5 Alabama and No. 16 Auburn (3:30 PM, ET).


Each FOUR SIDES OF THE STORY episode is told through four unique points of view. “The Band is on the Field!” relives one of the most memorable and unbelievable moments in college football history, when Stanford’s Band – as the clock struck zero – came on the field as the play was still live and Cal was returning the kickoff for a touchdown. The four sides of “The Band is on the Field!” will be told by:

• Mark Harmon, Former Stanford Kicker and Mike Dotterer, Former Stanford Running Back
  
• Richard Rogers, Former Cal Special Teams Captain and Kevin Moen, Former Cal Defensive Back who scored the game-winning touchdown

To this day nobody has seen my 16mm footage of the 1982 Big Game. Andy Geiger ordered us to shitcan it. I still have the original Kodak 7247 processed footage including Stanford bench reaction and a top camera view that may or may not show a knee down and a forward lateral.

IIRC, a month or so after the game, the Daily posted a photo a grad student had snapped during the play. The image clearly showed an official running down the field with his arms outstretched, apparently signalling the play dead before Moen had crossed the goal line. As I remember, and yes, I was there sitting behind the same endzone where Mariet Ford was credited with his phantom TD catch, the official did signal the play dead causing the band (and both teams, btw) to run onto the field. Of course, said official in the post play caucus denied such signalling thus enabling the travesty. May that guy rot in hell.

You just need to stick around until 2032, the fiftieth anniversary and see if you can get somebody to do a forensic investigation on the play, featuring "never before seen footage".  Maybe Netflix can do a special or something; I hear streaming services are "looking for content".

BC, here's an example. I own extensive footage from the giants 1968-1974. My father and I made seven long form commercials for the team. Plenty of high speed stuff, music, etc. The prevailing opinion is that the Giants own distribution rights to the productions, not the actual material. I cannot, w/o approval, legally use that footage in a production. I can however sell the original. Seven years ago MLB came to me and expressed interest in buying the library. They never made an offer and I never gave them a value. Since then the bottom has fallen out of the market.

Stanford signed over all rights to our recruiting footage in 1983. They have given footage from the 16mm prints to various entities and I see my stuff on the air at times. I know that the department cleaned out a closet of old prints some years ago afraid of any nitrate material. I think it's possible that the release prints from our films were among the historical footage shitcanned. God knows if footage of Pop Warner et al was included.

The Stanford material in my vault is there with Movietone newsreels, our commercial and industrial productions, baseball footage and other works of our family's 110 year career in pictures. There it will sit, no pay, no play.

Many years ago Bud Greenspan directed a series of old timer pieces for the NCAA. We shot an interview with Riegels in Davis, if I remember correctly. A very gracious guy who still was upset over the Georgia Tech win. There is an unwritten rule in our business that crew people should never ask for an autograph. I kick myself for not asking. Later, on the same project we shot an interview with the man who as a kid came out of the Memorial Stadium stands and tried to tackle Tom Harmon. He was still embarrassed that when he dove at the Voldemort winner he came up with air.
