We don’t look as rusty as I’d feared. Except for the shit clock violation as I was typing...

I missed the first couple of minutes. What happened to Terry? He looked woozy on the bench.

Loving the return of Cardinal Hoops! And of course excited to watch the women tomorrow as well.
Terry got smacked fighting for a rebound. He sat on the bench with his head mostly down and two trainers huddled around him. I think he then went briefly to the locker room--I was fearing concussion because he did look woozy but must have been just pain. At any rate, he is FUN TO WATCH!
Does anyone have any idea why Davis was not in the game for the last 15 minutes of play?

Oops. Sorry about my fat thumb typo. I didn’t know that coming into the game, we had the 13th highest three point field goal percentage in the nation! The announcers kept saying we’ll go dancing this year. I hope they’re right but we’ll need to play crisper. #gocard

Davis has two fouls, hence the sitting.
Great defense, rusty offense so far, which I blame on the long layoff. I hate the 2 week finals break every year. Why not play one game over the weekend between dead week and finals to keep the momentum going?

So the announcer Ed Cohen is the Knicks radio announcer and he is picking up some extra work on the Knicks West Coast swing? Stanford may be better than the Knicks.

Ummmm because they are Stanford students.
Dead week classes are not the challenge. So the week and weekend are not that different.
However to prepare for finals in classes many athletes need the two weeks to focus on competing against the other Stanford students.
The momentum the Stanford AD the wants to maintain is that near 100% graduation rate. That would be harder in hoops if the fall quarter is not protected.
Remember the NCAA tournaments clash with the winter quarter end so hoops players often take heavier loads in this quarter.
FWIW it is not really rust that is the factor. Often it is sleep deprivation. They likely will be rested and better on the court in a day or two.
You probably wouldn’t want to see a game in that weekend. They would be vulnerable to upsets, injuries and overall sub par play. Sleep deprivation has a profound impact on athletic performance.

Wow, it was 72-46 with about 2 minutes left, which means SJSU scored 12 points in garbage time.

By the way, Oscar da Silva will deservedly get the headlines for leading us in scoring and rebounding. But how about Isaac White? 12 points and 3/4 from the 3, to be our second leading scorer. On a night when Jones and Terry uncharacteristically went 0 for 9 from three, it was nice to see white make some shots.

Last year we won by 5, not sure how comparable that is other than to say, this team' calling card is defense and as good teams will, they showed up even though the offense was struggling at times. The light seems to have finally gone on for Da Silva, he can beat most of the guys who will be stuck trying to guard him and he now knows it. Great inbounds play to Wills.

Watched a good amount of this game. I'll bet 60 of Stanford's 78 points came in the paint or on fouls in the paint. Outside of White's three 3pt FGs, only Wills made another, which means Jones and Terry were 0-fer. DaSilva just toyed with SJSU inside and did whatever he wanted against man and zone defenses. Though Jones and Terry had terrible shooting games, it was clearly obvious they and DaSilva are Stanford's best players.
White did go 3/4 from 3pt line but also led the team in turnovers with 4 in only 18 minutes played. He can't be allowed to play PG, and brings nothing on defense, but certainly can provide 3pt production. Davis also had a pretty invisible game. I can't figure out if Wills isn't assertive enough or he knows his limitations and plays within them, but he can defend and is a decent athlete. Delaire can be trusted to do some good things, and Keefe is limited but seems to have a decent head for the game.
I don't know what Kisunas is doing. I would push my starters over giving him minutes. So basically Haase has 8 players who can contribute in some sort of meaningful way:
: Terry, DaSilva, Jones, Davis, Wills, Delaire, White, Keefe
When you look at minutes played, those eight guys got the most minutes. So this makes sense. You'd love to have 9-10 guys who can play, but it is not at all uncommon for college teams to have 8-man rotations. Biggest weakness for this team is lack of any real shot blocking presence.
Will be interesting to see how this team does against what looks like a pretty good USF team. Probably need a win there to get Maples filled for the big Kansas tilt on ABC in two weeks.

Agree that White had far too many TOs yesterday (and a couple were bad - early pick up of dribble; needless long pass into traffic), though I disagree with one of the travel calls.
But I think his D is a tad better than CW in these parts. Is he as good a defender as Wills, Davis and Terry? No. But there is a lot of room between that level and bad defense.

Yes, it would be nice to have good shot blocker/rim protector. On the other hand this team does NOT give teams too many good looks and they are often forced to take far less than optimum shots. In a way this helps offset the shot blocker issue. While we do not have the typical inside big man who can block shots and protect the rim, ODS is tending to to make other teams wish they had a smaller quicker guy to handle ODS. ODS seems to have finally figured out most guys trying to defend him can't. Some interesting contrasts between this team and many of Stanford' better teams in the past.

I've noticed that Stanford will often double team the opposing big man in the low post. That obviously has a risk associated with it. But, so far at least, it's proved to be pretty successful, forcing the opposing big to pass it out to someone along the perimeter. Stanford's players are generally quick enough to get at least a token hand in the face of the shooter. I can only assume that we'll double Kansas' 7 foot monster and have to hope that Kansas has an off-shooting night.
