3-0 Stanford, bottom of the 8th. in extra innings teams apparently start with a runner on second (?)

The second-base runner is used primarily in non-conference tournaments (not conference play or during
the NCAA tournament), when several games could be played in a day. It can help limit marathon
contests from delaying subsequent games/getting tournament schedule in.

Always great to start the season with a win! I thought Maddy was fantastic in the circle
against a solid GCU team (who boast a #75 ranking on Massey). So that is a great road
win to start the Cardinal resume.
I thought we got a bit unlucky early with some balls that were hit pretty well that seemed
to find GCU gloves (GCU's pitcher is a transfer from Maryland, and recorded the most strikeouts
by a Maryland freshman pitcher in 12 years, and she was very good until she reached the 100 pitch
mark, when we started connecting on pitches.
Taylor G. was the hero at the plate for Stanford, going 2-for-3 with a clutch RBI double that
gave us a 2 run lead.

Also key was the umpire making the correct call in the top of the eighth.
After Stanford had scored the runner from second to make it 1-0 on an errant throw off a sac bunt, Gindlesperger doubled off the wall in left center. Horeczko, trying to score from first, was steaming down the third baseline when the catcher took the throw standing straight up a good two feet down the line from home. Horecsko slid at the bag, and collided with the catcher's shinguards, never able to reach the plate, and it appeared was initially called out. The catcher went down in a heap, and was attended to for several minutes, as Stanford coaches checked on their player. During that time, the umpire correctly ruled that the catcher had interfered with the runner's ability to score.
Another nice performance was the closeout by Pancino.

Great point VG. Glad we got the correct call go our way this time. We didn't get the call in the regionals last year against Boise
(incorrectly I believe), and that was a big part in sending us home.
Alana Vawter gets the start today in Game #2 against New Mexico.

3-run two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh! Stanford 7, UNM 6.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

Frosh Tatum Boyd with a walk off 2 run single for a 7-6 win. Stanford was down 5-0 after 2. Big comeback. Great pitching 4 shutout innings by Millar

What an incredible comeback, sparked by two freshmen off
the bench in Kaitlyn Lim and Tatum Boyd! We struggled
for large stretches of the game offensively, defensively,
and in the circle, but we ultimately found our footing
on all three accounts when it mattered most.
Molly was great today. We have to cut down on the walks
in the circle though. 8 walks will not get it done most games.

Just saw a Video of Boyd’s walk off hit. A pop up that fell amoung the CFer,SS and 2nd baseman. Luck be with us tonight

I will take it. IMO, that mistake appears to be primarily on the SS. If you call off the CF (which she appears to do, since that would normally be the CF's ball; you can see her back off the ball), you have to make that catch. 2B also appears to back off, further suggesting to me that the SS had called for it.
Seems like we have some strong Cardinal support in AZ this weekend! Great to see!

Stanford falls to 3-1 on the year after a 2-0 setback
to New Mexico. A pair of solo homeruns were the difference,
as the Card couldn't get its offense going in the rematch
from yesterday.
