What skater used a Pivot helmet? What was he/she allowed to do?
Who wore the striped helmet?
thanks for posting. i used to love to watch on tv when i was a kid!
i assumed the track was wood. wasn't it? did they have space-age materials before the space age?
i believe the striped helmet cover is the pivot helmet, worn by the pivot. the pivot starts as a blocker, but is eligible to become a jammer, to lap the pack and score points, by exchanging helmet covers for the starred jammer helmet cover.
other
skaters whose names i remember are gene gammon, "iron" mike gammon, ann calvello, joan weston.
come to think of it, back then roller derby was one of the few team sports where women had status equal to men.
we have a friend, family practice doctor by day, who was on a flat-track team in portland for several years. we went up and watched her team while were were in oregon for the solar eclipse. lots of fun though not nearly as fast or violent as banked track. the crowd was great as well. not a stanford crowd. young, lots of colorful hair and wild clothing.
