I think the reaction in Georgia to Watkins' commitment is a sign of why Stanford has its own blog. Its nationwide reach is now going beyond recruiting.

Actually when I saw it initially I was wondering what the rules are about hands to the face by either the offensive or defensive guy. That stiff arm went right to the guy's facemask, though it didn't at all look as if Meinken took hold of it.

Take another look at that video. Did the Duck player grab Meinken's face mask?

Yes, the Dookie briefly grabbed the facemask, but only to keep from breaking a hip in his unexpected fall.

I believe as long as the offensive player doesn't slap the head or grab the facemask (just use a flat, open hand like Meinken did) with his stiff arm, it's perfectly legal. I don't think this is really fair from a defensive player's standpoint but all the rules seem to be pro offense these days. 

However, if a player is blocking, the hands can't come up to the head area. That's a 15 yard penalty - "illegal hands to the face".

I was a little surprised there wasn't a facemask call, but given the way the play turned out, I can't say that the foul greatly affected the outcome of the play.  (But could he have taken it all the way if not for that?)
