Well, the Phillies just lost a double header to the Nats, dropping them to 26-28. The Brewers beat the Reds to my surprise. If the Giants win tonight they are still alive, but in-division record is the #1 tie-breaker, and Giants have the worst among the contenders, so they must finish 1 game better than everyone else.

Giants win 5-2. Stanford's Slater got on base five times, going 2-2 with three walks, his 8th stolen base and an HR. Joey Bart, 2 doubles, Belt a pinch hit double and almost hit a very long home run. Dickerson HR. Smyly pitched great. Defense was terrific. Daniel Robertson, normally a shortstop, was in left field. Hampson hit a ball headed for the corner, Robertson cut it off, threw a rope to 2B, threw out the speedy Hampson. Giants now 27-27, tied with Milwaukee. Coonrod got the save with two strikeouts, and about 1/2 dozen 100 mph pitches.

Every game is "must win" it seems, but a lot of contributors tonight.
Robertson's throw from LF to gun down Pillar (who also had a very good game for the Rockies) at second for first out of inning was key play of the game.
Belt's almost homer would have been a salami!
Dickerson with a very nice PH(?) dinger.
Smyly pitched pretty well. The only move I didn't like real time was taking out the lefty who had 0.00 ERA with a runner on 1B and 2 outs, in favor of the righty submarine guy. Pillar smoked a double down the LF line and tied the game at 2. Other than that, Kapler's decisions looked all good.
Slater has 8 steals in 9 attempts . . . nice!

Based on the other pretenders, it looks like if the Giants can win 3 more games and get to 30-30 they will eke out the #8 spot. Basically, they must win the next two against the Rockies and get one off the Padres. The Phillies are not out of it yet because they hold the tie-breaker over the Brewers and Giants.
Reds 28-28 (Brewers, 3 Twins)
Brewers 27-27 (Reds, 5 Cardinals)
Giants 27-27 (2 Rockies, 4 Padres)
Phillies 26-28 (Nats, 3 Marlins)
If the Reds beat the Brewers today, and the Giants beat the Rockies, it’s going to be really tough for the Brewers. The Cardinals are better, and the Giants have one more game against the Rockies.

Giants are 1-5 against the Padres. Their one win was 7-6. Two losses were by two runs, the other three were by five or six runs.
Good news is the games are all at home where the Giants are 1-2 with the close win, a closs loss, and even the 12-7 loss was tied after nine. So...I think they can get at least one, possibly two, hopefully three against the Padres.

Rogers has actually pitched quite well after about the first week of the season. (He gave up 9 runs in two games the first week or so) What is bizarre is that right handlers are hitting significantly better against him than left handlers.

Sacto site has closed. I wonder why they haven’t talked about bringing up Adon he of the 102mph. Not crazy about Rogers long term. The more you hit against him the more you figure out. The ideal closer has good control, quick delivery to hold on runners and an out pitch that is consistent. Rivera’s cutter, Nen’s slider, Gossage’s exploding heater, Hoffman’s change, Mike Marshall’s fork.
I seem to be wrong about Slater. Still takes a called third strike but is the best base runner on the team. I like him at first long term since he is often hurt. Dickerson the ideal DH against righties.
Building a staff from top to bottom is the key to next year.
I still think Pillar is a hell of a player.

It wasn't so much bringing in Rogers (though I admit to being skeptical when it comes to one-pitch pitchers . . . not named Rivera); but rather, taking out a guy who has a 0.00 ERA in real innings pitched. Plus, his stuff is really good. Maybe Pillar's R/L splits are THAT mind-boggling that Kapler felt he had to do that. But man, let the guy at least get into some trouble (a runner in scoring position) before being yanked. It sucks that somebody else caused him to lost the perfect ERA.
And I'm with Phogge re: Pillar. I'm sure the asking price was too high, but I like having tough, gamers on the roster.
Cueto (shaky lately), Smyly, and Gausman is not a bad trio for the starting rotation next season. But it would be great to add a legit #1 or #2.

Rogers has appeared in 26 games and given up zero runs in 21 of them. In the other five, he gave up 5 and 4 (first five games of the season) and 2, 2 and 1. He's given up seven earned runs in his last 21 innings, a 3.00 ERA for that time. Not bad for a setup guy. Affeldt's career ERA was about 3.9, Javvy Lopez was about a 3.5. I think Rogers will get there.
As for Pillar, I didn't think he was a terrible player, although he didn't really have a good season with the Giants, and would have commanded $10 million in his last year of arbitration. Pillar was #132 of 135 NL players in OBP and #124 in OPS in the NL. That doesn't scream $10 million guy to me.
I would have signed him for $4.25 million...which Boston did. And they traded him to Colorado in mid-season, where he's thriving in a hitter-friendly ballpark.

So taking Rogers' last 21 innings: 3.00 ERA - still MUCH WORSE than Garcia's 0.00 ERA in his 15+ innings.
I guess I also fundamentally oppose knee-jerk substitutions, which this one appeared to be. For example, if a set up man mows down 3 batters in 11 pitches in the 8th inning, I don't understand why it's verboten to bring him back to close out the game (or at least give him a shot). Jarlin Garcia got two outs and then gave up a single (or walk). Either way, it did not have "trouble" written all over it, at least as I was watching him deal.

Slater has 8 steals in 9 attempts . . . nice!
Rogers has actually pitched quite well after about the first week of the season. (He gave up 9 runs in two games the first week or so) What is bizarre is that right handlers are hitting significantly better against him than left handlers.

You’d think each day of the last week would bring more clarity, but you would be wrong.
First of all, the Phillies stayed alive by finally beating the Nats, but they still get the Rays to finish. The Reds nosed ahead of everyone and really hurt the Brewers by taking that series. The Marlins continue falling and have now put themselves in position where they pretty much have to win their last game against the Braves today, and take their series at the Yankees. Not to be outdone are the Cardinals who dropped a game to the Royals that made their lives more difficult. And then there are the Giants who are now one win against the Rockies today from needing just one win vs. Padres out of four tries to likely make it to post season. Basically, it’s still a free for all for four playoff spots; both wild cards and the #2 in East and Central.
The Giants will benefit from Padres injury misfortune with SP Mike Clevinger. He was scheduled to start Game 1 of Playoffs, but he is now in doubt, so one of the Padres better starters will not pitch against the Giants as a result, so he can be ready for more important duty.
Cardinals 27-26 (5 Brewers)*
Giants 28-27 (Rockies, 4 Padres)
Reds 29-28 (3 Twins)
Marlins 28-28 (Braves, 3 Yankees)
Brewers 27-28 (5 Cardinals)
Phillies 28-29 (3 Rays)
* Will only play 58 games unless needed, and it looks like they could be. Will play double header at Detroit on Monday if standings dictate.
Don’t think the Reds have it easy. They are playing a Twins team desperately trying to avoid playing the Yankees in first round, a team that has historically dominated them in playoffs.
It looks to me the #2 NL East team could very well finish under .500.
Honestly, it looks like the Giants have the easiest path. Win 2/5 and they will be in. That said, finishing 30-30, likely in tie with Reds, gives them the #8 spot and the Dodgers as Reds have better in division record. That said, getting blasted by Braves won’t be any more fun. This said, must beat the Rockies today to have a realistic chance of making post season.

Playing the last 4 against the Padres won’t be close to Easy but sure hope you are correct
So when’s the last time the Giants ended the game with their first four hitters in the lineup hitting over 300?
Kudos to Kapler for bringing in Webb in the second inning. It worked
I’ve wanted Belt to be traded for 5 years now, is he our MVP?

Belt has fooled everybody. He is laying off the pitches that have skunked him in the past, the breaking ball in and down and the high fastball away. He has played great defense. I’m shocked. The team’s best player is Watson otherwise it’s MVP by committee: Yaz, Belt, Dick, Slater even Dubon.

Most of them are having career best OPS years, as I'd posted separately. In fact, I think all of the top 10 hitters, outside of Longoria, were career best. Wish it were the case for the pitchers.

60 is different than 162. And the way the park has been playing is a gigantic (can’t use the h word because of the juvenile auto change) factor. But it’s been nice to see the hitting. Pitching probably suffers a bit due to the park changing.

Clevinger was not going to face the Giants. He started Wednesday. His next start was going to be game 1 of playoffs. Hope he gets healthy. Pads have best chance to beat Dodgers.
What will be interesting is how the Pads play the series. They have locked the 4 seed and can’t move up. So I suspect it will be a dance of playing the regulars just enough to keep them fresh. That may help the Giants a bit. (I vacillate on whether the 7 inning DH on Friday is good for the Giants. I suppose it’s better than having played one more in SD at a time when the Pads were smoking hot)
