Do you believe in miracles? Where are you Paul Carey . . .
There were so many great quotes from the URI end game (a cassette tape of which I played over and over again into oblivion).
One of my favorites was when Stanford had come all the way back and taken the lead. Weems is on the line with Stanford up 2 and 13 seconds left and is shooting 1 and 1 (IIRC). He makes the first. As he is lining up the second, Platz says: "If he makes this Stanford has one foot and all but the toes of the other in the state of Texas!" (Or something close to that). Great image.
Of course, Weems misses; URI dribbles up the court down 3 and Arthur Lee fouls Tyson Wheeler(?) while throwing up a desperation three-point prayer. Momentary panic as Murph is trying to sort what is going on as Wheeler goes to the line.
Platz: "But Murph, this is hard to do. Tyson Wheeler is a 66% FT shooter: not 86%, not 76%, but 66%." [I think those numbers were right . . . ].
Murph: "He must make all 3 . . .
Clang, clang, intentional miss.
I felt badly for Wheeler - a great player who found the moment just too big.
But screw Jim Harrick, that whiny sore loser, and his team for exiting with no grace.
And btw, San Antone is still the best Stanford sports roadie of my lifetime. The Final Four - especially at that locale - cannot be topped (though Orange Bowl in South Beach was pretty sweet, as is Pasadena on New Year's Day).
