Does a remarkable job, as does that franchise. But sometimes you need to set the analytics aside and manage what you see. Snell was dominate. Yes the last 5 hitters had made contact. Which I guess in today’s game means you are losing effectiveness - even though none of the 5 were hit particularly hard. He was at about 73 pitches in his last game of the year. He had struck out the next three up - Betts, Seeger and Turner in all 6 at bats. But it’s the third time through the order. And we’ve know what the numbers say. So out he comes. And with itbthe ball game
Snell looked pissed. He should have been. He was dealing. Leave him in. Scrap the math.
Sometimes at least.
Dodgers were a far superior team. TB’s Order fron 6-9 is awful. Eventually Dodgers would have won anyway. But man, I just don’t get how he pulls Snell. I understand it’s “what he does”. But sometimes I think the game dictates what you do. That was one of those times.
These playoffs also solidified the ridiculous reliance on homeruns and walks The percentage of runs that score as a result of homeruns is just absurd. Muncy is the poster child for the greatness of walks. Jesus, how bout attacking him early and throughout. He certainly has proven he won’t chase – and he ain’t Barry Bonds
I don’t know how they change it but they have to do something. To me the first order of business is getting rid of the shifts. At least make foor infields stay on the skin. If you want to put three to one side of second base fine – although if I was boss I wouldn’t allow that either. They need to get more balls in play having a chance to be hits. Because right now it doesn’t make sense to do anything other than grip it rip it and try to hit home runs. And the strike outs are way too plentiful.
Another thing I would do is make it illegal for players to bring out those little cheat sheets. What an awful look to see the pietcher reach in his back pocket and pull out crib notes. Give me a break.
Finally - and I never thought I’d say this – I’d give some real thought to limiting the number of relievers a team can use in the game to 5. Using 8-9 pitchers a game is just ridiculous. It lengthens the game. And it leads to a bunch of clones coming out of the bullpen throwing 97 miles an hour for about 15 pitches.
I am generally a traditionalist when it comes to baseball - I don’t even like the DH. But they have to do something. It’s was in many ways a fun World Series; but every game is like four hours long with 25 strikeouts, some walks and then you’d wait for somebody to hit a homerun usually. A steady parade of pitchers. At least the Dodgers had a few actual rallies. Tampa Bay well they did have the hit from that kid in game four.
