Hands down Connery. However Craig is very good. Production level quality and budget help him out.

Connery's father was of Irish descent and his mother was a Maclean. Through the centuries the MacLeans united with and sometimes fought against my MacDonald ancestors. They often battled against the MacDonald arch enemy, the Campbells. After the Battle of Culloden many remaining Macleans joined the British Army and some fought in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Connery campaigned for Scottish independence but ultimately was knighted by the Queen. Recent polls have shown that if a new referendum were called Scotland would be free.

Connery was clearly the best, though I did enjoy that Moore played the role with a little humor.

George Lazenby's life story is absolutely hilarious. Diana Rigg hated his guts.
Funny how many non-English actors played Bond. Niven was born in Belgravia, Moore was born in London and Craig was born in Chester. But the rest weren't English.
Connery was Scottish. Brosnan was Irish, born in Drogheda. Dalton was Welsh. George Lazenby was Australian.
And, rather interestingly, Clint Eastwood was asked to play James Bond when Connery's role was winding down. Eastwood's lawyer represented the Broccolis, and the offer came through the lawyer. Eastwood was quoted in an interview:
“I was also offered pretty good money to do James Bond if I would take on the role. This was after Sean Connery left. My lawyer represented the Broccolis [who produce the Bond franchise], and he came and said, ‘They would love to have you.’ But to me, well, that was somebody else’s gig. That’s Sean’s deal. It didn’t feel right for me to be doing it.”

Connery of course had all of it. In every movie I saw him in. A dudes dude. And a lady’s man at the same time. Not many can pull that off.
What I love about the Bond series is it’s tongue in cheekiness. Raised to its highest level in Never Say Never Again, when Connery pours a beaker of Bond piss in the eyes of an enemy who then shrieks in agony as it burns like acid. Hilarious.

The problem with Craig is that he hates the role. The new one (now postponed) was going to be his last one, and he openly spoke about not wanting to do it (he was under contract).
My vote for the next bond goes to Idris Elba. Anyone who can play a drug lord in Baltimore and an out of control detective inspector in London can act.

Perhaps some 7 years back, Colin Firth would have been my choice. He is now 60, and the producers will probably look for somebody younger who could be Bond for some 5 movies within the next 10-12 years.
