I remember hearing that Rod Garcia missed 4 FGs in a Stanford loss to San Jose St during the 1971 Rose Bowl season. He came back and kicked the game winner in the Rose Bowl. Don't expect that will happen this year since Stanford looks to be a far cry from a Rose Bowl team.

Four things I didn't know about Rod Garcia:
1. He was from Chile, moved to USA at age 12 and played for La Mirada high school.
2. He was HM All America in soccer
3. Was drafted by the Earthquakes.
4. Coaches women's soccer at Hancock college in Santa Maria. His brother coaches men's soccer there.
5. Worked for 20 years at Chevron.
6. Once kicked two 50 yard FGs in a Stanford game.
7. Still third for most FGs at Stanford with 84 (Jordan Williamson and John Hopkins are #1 and #2 with 90 and 88).
8. Still holds the longest FG record at Stanford with 59 yards (tied with Mark Harmon).
9. Coached boys tennis in HS.
10. Ran track in HS.

The 1971 SJS game was bizarre. Rod missed the four field goals and an extra point. Dave Chaney made over 20 tackles, most solo. Stanford went up and down the field only to end frustrated. Frustrating year even with a Rose Bowl win. Ran all over Duke but couldn’t finish drives and lost to WSU on a last second FG. All three losses at home.

It seems apparent that Jet is still not recovered from his injury last year. If this is true, how did Shaw not know? Was Jet making good kicks in practice? Was he making them from long range with a confident swing?
For a former Mr. Automatic to miss the first couple of FGs should have been a brobdingnagian sign that a course correction was needed. Going for it on fourth down or putting in a new kicker seemed like reasonable decisions. Now you have a former Mr. Automatic with completely shattered confidence as you put the team's scoring on his back four times only to fail every time.
That doesn't even take into account the game's effect on Jet's NFL resume...I presume you'd have to be a good salesman to convince an NFL team that your 0-4 game was not representative of your kicking ability and that it was really due to lingering effects of an injury from the previous season. Maybe missing one kick might be okay, but four...that's brutal.

Not sure if anyone's come up with a cure for the yips, but that's going to be hard to fix, esp for a guy who we know used to have ice water in his veins.

The Stanford coaching staff gave him opportunities to make the record even longer. I was at the 1973 Big Game (was a HS student at the time). It was Garcia's last game. Back then, the rules gave the opponent the ball back on the 20 for a missed FG. Garcia had two attempts from the Stanford side of the field, one of which I'm pretty sure was a 63 yard try. It ended just short of the crossbar. Ed MacCauley announced, "Well, it was close...."
