I hate taking the 5.  I take the 101 if at all possible.  I know it's longer.  Nicer drive, less fog.

101 has much better food options! I mean besides Harris Ranch, which we've discussed in another thread, where else within a couple miles of I-5 can you find a quality meal between Pacheco Pass and Santa Clarita? (The comparable journey on 101 would be between Gilroy and Ventura, which means you pass through Salinas, SLO, Nipomo--that one's for BobK--and Santa Barbara.)

I new exactly what you meant. An expert tip--exit the highway and head to the on-ramp. As most of the exits connect to an overpass, as you head down the on-ramp, pull off to the side, there you're pretty much shielded from view from at least the traffic going your direction. . . .

the locals just pull off on the shoulder and go in full view for enjoyment of the passers by and maybe with hope for an offer.............have done many a business trips into the valley traveling up and down I5, 99, 152 and 41/46..............just and every day occurrence.
