The September 4 contest against Kansas State in Arlington, Texas, begins at 9 a.m. PDT. In early starts in the past – notably a 2009 contest at Wake Forest and the 2015 opener at Northwestern, both losses – the team woke early and practiced early to acclimate.

I thought the problem at Northwestern was they got the team up at something like 4:30 a.m.  to get in all the usual meetings and pregame preparation that they do for other games (didn't want to change the "routine"). I hope they move most of that stuff to the evening before so they can sleep longer

I kind of like this idea. When I was young, I used to have difficulty sleeping in hotels. So, I think this approach is interesting -- just accept the fact that you'll get one night's bad sleep, but try to limit it to just that one night.

Note that the coach is implicitly acknowledging how problematic it is to schedule cross-country trips during the season, yet we keep doing this. This isn't even the only one this year -- the team flies cross-country for Vanderbilt also. Maybe the SEC Network will be sneaky and schedule it as a 6AM game.

My recollection is that many 18 & 19 year old students have *never* stayed in a hotel before. So I wonder if the team will be a better road team this year because they got used to living out of a hotel last year.

So the players get a good night's sleep in their home beds on Thursday with a reasonable 7 am wakeup call on Friday, board a late-morning flight and arrive into Dallas in the late afternoon. Check in to the hotel, eat dinner, do your walk-throughs and turn in for the night and set the alarm for a 6 am (4 am body-clock time) wakeup on Saturday. I guess that works?

Valid point. In person meetings haven't been common for a while, so the travel option is off the table I would imagine. That has been true for me. One of my main customers is in Italy.  Another is in Australia. The good news is that it takes a while to get to both places, so you can sleep on the plane and land at a reasonable time to go to work. The bad news is the dreaded "third day syndrome" when the adrenaline wears off.
