WBB: Rankings Thread
(12-18-2021, 10:57 PM)Maple Leaf Wrote: Arizona vs Texas game per espn web site is shown as being cancelled. The Arizona WBB site says "Due to COVID-19 protocols and contact tracing within the Arizona Women's Basketball program, Sunday's game versus Texas in Las Vegas has been cancelled. The Coast-to-Coast Challenge will work with Texas to find a suitable replacement opponent."
[Since I don't see any news of a team accepting as of 10PM the night before, it seems likely to me that the game will not be able to be played Sunday.]
A news report says
Quote:It's the first time this season the Wildcats have had COVID-19 issues in their program leading to a cancellation of a game. Their Dec. 3 matchup vs. UC Riverside was canceled because of COVID-19 protocols in the Riverside program.
The university did not specify if a player or coach tested positive for COVID-19. It is also not known if the two schools will work to reschedule the game for a later date this season.
Arizona has 13 days between now and its next scheduled game at USC on Dec. 31.
Presumably pre-season games are no-contests if not played. What about conference games? Up to the conference, or will the NCAA apply its leadership?
I believe during Saturday's Stanford @ Tennessee game, the announcers indicated the NCAA Div. I committee was going to discuss whether to require a minimum number of games played in order to play in the tournament.

In some conference (i believe it was on the men's side), the forfeit would not go against their NCAA record but would count as a loss in conference standings. So that's a possibility in this case.

Pac-12 footprint requires airplanes to get from venue to venue and the women's teams often fly commercial so I fear the Pac-12 will see a lot of cancellations over the next several weeks.
Hopefully the team has lots of N95 masks.

Most Pac12 women's teams fly charter, not commercial. Stanford took a charter plane to Tennessee. Didn't think we'd be back in this position again with cancelled games. Hoping all teams can stay healthy.

And that the masks they wear fit better than the ones we see them wearing on TV, which always seem to be slipping down the nose and then have to be readjusted. What's with that? Can't Stanford find better quality masks, with a better nose clip so they don't slip?

UW men forfeited to UCLA earlier this month. The game will only count in conference standings. Their game with Arizona was postponed to a later date. They also had a game that was cancelled.

Also of note - Stanford and Arizona are the only P12 teams in the top 25. Colorado is 26. Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA are not even among those also receiving votes. Injuries really seem to be taking a toll on the teams expected to be nationally competitive.

It would be hard to stay at 2 with three losses I think even though the loss would be to a higher ranked team.
If the No. 2 beats the No. 1, it is pretty clear we will move up.
Massey has us at 6, moving up from 8. It has UConn at 8, Texas 5, N Carolina 4, Arizona 3, NC State 21, S Carolina 1.

As for tomorrow's game, I would keep Stanford at #2 if they lose and move them up to #1 if they win.
I find it interesting how very good teams with great talent can have a cold streak during a game and recover, or how some lose by a considerable margin one night and come back to win the next night. Call it st** happens or the "whimsical basketball gods at work." Some fans might just call it "playing the game" without expectation. And its not just young college talent that expose their humanness on the court, the pros do it as well. I am eager to see what transpires with our game against S Carolina. Let’s hope we can use our skill and poise and avoid those unpredictable pitfalls such as the scoring drought that happened in the Tennessee game.

An alternative to Massey is the RPI, which is still available even if not used. Here it is. Texas is noticeable absent: it is 46th in RPI. For all its faults, I think Massey is usually better than the RPI.

I think this comment belongs here in this thread . . . New Creme bracketology out, still has Stanford and Arizona as #1 seeds, but no longer shows Arizona as the AQ, but neither is Stanford. Last version had Arizona as the AQ, so I guess he's sort of upgraded Stanford. Also interesting which #2s he shows the Pac 12 #1s facing -- Arizona has Louisville (which they defeated early in season, their only quality win) as the #2 and Stanford's bracket has Texas as #2 -- which we all know about.

At this point, I suppose that whoever between Arizona and Stanford wins the PAC12 regular season/conference tournament gets the #1 seed in the Spokane Region.

Wichita is closer to Tucson than Spokane. For Stanford to get Spokane and Arizona to get Wichita is best for both.

It’s interesting that he has UCONN as a a 4-seed and us as a 1 seed. We both have 3 losses, but UCONN has 1 bad loss (arguably 2 with the SC blowout) and no signature wins, while we have 3 top-10 wins and all our losses have been close games to ranked teams. I guess that accounts for it, but I’m still surprised to see UCONN drop so low.

AP poll just out, Stanford is still #2 despite the loss to S Carolina. In fact, Stanford got more votes this week than last -- 688 this week vs 678 last week. Pretty strong endorsement for a team with 3 losses. Next highest team with three losses is Maryland, at #6. UConn remains at #11

AP ratings out -- S Carolina still number 1, tho no longer unanimous. Stanford still number 2, with a few more votes than last week. The others getting #1 votes, 5 for #3 Louisville and 3 for #4 Arizona. None for Stanford. Interesting that Arizona hangs in there despite not having played for nearly three weeks -- ranking based on that early season win over Louisville and little else.
