On a challenging course like Grayhawk, just playing par golf and keeping the big numbers down will be really important.  Last year as I recall no team was under par, and the top teams were around +15 for the stroke play part. Par golf would probably get you into match play.

I love love love the NCAA golf championships too. It reminds me of my high school golf experience which I remember with great fondness. I will watch whether or not Stanford is playing. But it's a lot more fun when they are. I am planning now to attend next year when the tournament moves to La Costa in north San Diego County. I've attended twice before at Riviera and Karsten Creek.

The Stanford men have been very successful at advancing to the NCAA championships in the last 10 years. From 2011-12 to 2021-22, the team made the NCAA championship 8 of 10 years (no tournament in 2020). But they have a mediocre record at NCAAs. They have missed the 54 hole cut 6 of 8 times. The only times they made match play were in 2014 at Prairie Dunes where they lost to Oklahoma State in the semis and 2019 where they won it all at The Blessings.

I hope that the team will play up to their potential with resilience and mental toughness. It's going to take a lot of both. This *is* a veteran team with 2 juniors (Thorbjornsen, Vilips), a senior (Brown), a 5th year (Ng) and a 6th year (Menon). Thorbjornsen, Vilips and Brown all have international match play experience (Palmer Cup, Walker Cup, etc.). They should not be fazed by the setting.

It's just a way to introduce randomness at the very end of the tournament.  It would be like baseball, after playing the entire season with cumulative scoring, suddenly switching to inning match play halfway through the playoffs.  The Giants could lose game seven for the National League pennant with a total score of 20-5 by outscoring the hated Doyers 5-0 in four innings and being outscored 1-0 in five innings, thus losing the match-play game and pennant because we want randomness at the crucial portion of the playoffs.  Ridiculous.  

I will be watching or following the scoreboard at work as long as Stanford is in it though.

Pete - match and medal play have both been in use for golf championships for 160 years. They are both legitimate and recognized forms of competition. In baseball, there is really only one way to play.

I think that match play was added primarily for television. The Golf Channel would offer money to televise the event if it could be assured of more drama to keep people interested. As a bonus, the final day of stroke play and the 2 match play days are on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when Golf Channel is not televising pro events. A win-win for them. The fans have loved it. It's been so successful for the men (who started playing this format in 2009) that the women followed suit 6 years later in 2015. In the 7 years since then, 6 different schools have won. The men have had 10 different schools win in 13 years. In short, I think the medal-match play format has been great for growing interest in the game.

Personally, I think the format makes for the most challenging NCAA Championship possible.  Golf is a very tough mental game at this level.  The match play portion puts a little more mano a mano element into the mix.  You can give you opponent a two footer on one hole, then later when things may be tighter, you make him put the two footer.  There is a lot to like about match play.  I have no idea how the players feel about it.  It is also part of Country vs Country matches etc.  I think TV likes match play also.

Initially I didn't like the combo format but I have grown to like it. To make it to match play you have to play well in stroke play, and match play definitely is better suited to TV, especially with the "drop one" format in college stroke play that is always hard to follow on a broadcast.
