We take on Cal State Northridge on Wednesday night. CSUN is coming off an opening loss to Cal on Monday, 86-56. They are headed to Arizona after us, so their scheduling threw them up against 3 Pac 12 schools to start their season.
Last year CSUN was 9-19. This year CSUN against Cal was led by 2 graduate students, 6'1" Tess Amundson, and 5'6" Jordyn Jackson. Each of them showed the willingness to successfully shoot the three ball. These two very experienced players also led the team last season. Amundson had a whopping 49% three point shooting average (56/114), so she needs to be defended! She led Div I nationally last year in three point shooting percentage. (Watch # 15!) This year her little sister Laney is transferring in to join the team, so we had better hope that she shoots less than 49%!
Beyond a player who has a phenomenal three point shot, I can't tell from the stats what the character of this team is. On paper, it does not look to be as strong a team even as SDSU, which they apparently did not play last year.
Interesting how much CSUN is sacrificing to play us:
"Not often do you get to add the second-ranked team to your schedule, three weeks before opening day," Mitchell said. "Some scheduling conflicts and timing allowed it to work out for both parties. My respect for (Stanford head coach) Tara (VanDerveer) was a critical element to agree to play the game. We are excited for the opportunity to compete against one of the top programs in the country."
To make it possible to play us, CSUN had to reclassify a game it was sure to win to become an exhibition, thus making room in its schedule for us. So they subtracted a win and probably added a loss so they could play this game. They must view the experience as valuable to take a hit to their win/loss column.
The most interesting thing may be seeing if Tara changes the starters or experiments with new combinations of players, in the wake of whatever she has learned about the team so far.
