What a nice feel-good win. It is good to have some of these in Pac-12 play, but other than the ASU game they have been few and far between--probably a mark of the improved depth of the conference and our offensive struggles.
WSU is a good team, though, and so a 33 point defensive beat-down, on the road, is impressive. Interesting to know that Cam was under the weather. Like many here, I was most impressed with Betts. This was not statistically her best game (CSUN, 18 pts) or her most minutes (Grambling, 17 minutes) but WSU was far more serious competition, and she went 5/6 with a block and a steal. Her conditioning is obviously improving, as her speed up and down the court is much better. She seemed to be more comfortable on defense. She is beginning to look a lot more like a #1 recruit.
This was the most minutes Nivar has played since Lepolo was injured, and in this game she played more (20) than Lepolo (19). Lepolo had 1 assist and 1 turnover along with 2 steals and 2 points, Nivar had 5 assists and 2 turnovers along with 5 points and 2 steals. It looks to me that Nivar is finally catching up to the role and coming into her own. It is a bit deceptive though, since my impression is that Jones brought the ball up court and distributed it more than either Lepolo or Nivar, each of whom played the 2 on those occasions when Jones was at the 1. Jones had 4 assists to 2 turnovers.
Also like some of you, I am impressed with Bosgana. I singled out her defense for praise much earlier in the year, but going 3/3 in 9 minutes, including 2 treys and a wonderful curl around the paint for a layup, was quite impressive offense. I hope she can bottle that performance and pour it out in future games when we really need it.
Demetre seems to be getting more and more minutes, while the experiment with Emma-Nnopu seems to be fading somewhat. At 25 minutes this was the most she has played this year. It was far from her best offensive performance, but you could see that WSU came out to defend her at the line the way they do Jump, so her three point threat is taken seriously.
Jones was a bit of an enigma to me. She scored 13 points with a killer shot from the midrange in the first half, but then did not score another point. Of course, she didn't need to--the rest of the team was expanding the lead. She is the definition of a utility player--doing whatever is required at any particular moment.
But let's talk about defense. This is Stanford's identity at this point, and holding a serious power 5 team to 38 points was quite an accomplishment. CLW had 8 points on 3/13 shooting, and 1/5 from three point range. Murakatete was 2/4 for 7 points. WSU shot 25%, had 17 turnovers, got blocked 5 times, and only managed 7 assists for the game. We have been putting larger players like Demetre, Jones, and Brink out on the perimeter, and this really disrupts the three point shooting of other teams. Normally this would be attacked by drives to the basket, but our defense has been sufficiently deep to prevent that.
37 bench points--after many many games when the bench seemed to recede, this was especially welcome.
