Time for me to pause and celebrate the success of this team.  They were picked third in pre season polls. They won it outright with a game to go.  We are talking about them in terms of a final four slot. There wasn’t much of that in pre season.  In short, they have over performed vs last years underperformance.  Hats of to a gritty hard working Bucnch of young women.

The coaches too, deserve commendation. This season began with the shell shock of two undergraduate excellent players transferring to other schools. It looks to me as if changes  have been made; changes in attitude, recognition that you can’t keep young talent if they don’t have playing time and a refocus on team chemistry.  They successfully integrated three freshmen plus Harrriel into important roles.

I will continue to kibbitz and criticize the coaching staff and agonize over player performance. I suspect I will exercise my prerogative as a fan, a season ticket holder and a former 5th grade YMCA team coach to criticize and complain.  But right now, a hats off and thank you to this team and these coaches is due.

I absolutely agree. Kiki has been much better then I think anyone expected. Jump has improved on defense more than I expected. Lepolo has mostly been just enough better offensively.  And most days somebody out of the supporting cast has stepped up though is seems to be a different player every game. Combined with better chemistry, and this team has been significantly better then expected.

2. the set with two guards outside, two bigs down low -- forming a rectangle -- and Demetre flashing to the foul line, receiving the 'entry' pass, turning, and hitting a jump shot. This set worked well and she has a smooth jumper. Good to have that play in the quiver.

Thanks for pointing this out, MV! That was a very interesting play and it worked well with Demetre's midrange jumper.  It almost looked like it was a play from our zone-breaking offense, but OSU wasn't playing zone.  But it seemed to work well against the pack-the-paint strategy.  Perhaps we will see more of it.

Every time I hear them talk about the chemistry of this year's team I am grateful, followed by a shudder when I think back on Haley Jones interviewing Luaren Betts and both of them laughing about how they didn't take the game at UW nor the game against Ole Miss seriously last season.

Stanford only played 6 games vs. the other top 6 teams (USC, UCLA, Utah, Colorado, OSU). In contrast, USC, UCLA, Utah, Colorado and Oregon State played 9 games vs. the other top 6 for them. Those 3 games likely helped to separate Stanford from the pack.

Yes, I've thought a lot about this and wonder what our record would have been had we played USC, UCLA, Colorado, and Utah twice each.  My guess is we might have a couple more losses.  Which is why winning by 2 games over the nearest competition in league play would be sweet.  Of course, those four teams are all happy they only had to play us once, so it works both ways.

We might well get rematches against one or two of those schools in the Pac 12 tournament; for example, perhaps Colorado in the semis and USC in the final, if we make it that far.  So the tournament may become a fair test.
